The new nickname Dave Edwards has for Wolves midfielder Marshall Munetsi

Marshall Munetsi remains a player who divides opinion in the Wolves fanbase.

The midfielder arrived midway through last season, and has played the vast majority of games, and it’s clear he is a favourite of the manager.

Before the international break, Vitor Pereira lauded Munetsi, branding him an ‘animal’ in terms of the way he works.

Certainly, the Zimbabwe international’s work out of possession is not in any doubt and never has been.

The former Reims star seems to be everywhere at once, and probably has the best engine in the whole Wolves squad.

But some supporters have previously questioned whether Marshall Munetsi does enough with the ball.

So far this season though, Munetsi has scored one goal against Everton in the Carabao Cup, and also forced the own goal against Brighton with a vicious strike.

Munetsi came up again on The Official Wolves Podcast, and it was there that Dave Edwards bestowed him a new nickname.

It seems that regardless of the system Pereira chooses, Munetsi has a high chance of starting for Wolves.

Seemingly, the manager cannot do without his relentless running and physicality, and it’s clear that he’ll likely finish the season with a lot of minutes under his belt.

Munetsi continues to have his critics despite his recent upturn.

But for Dave Edwards, his contributions are invaluable. Edwards has previously insisted Wolves are better when Munetsi starts, and the former midfielder has come up with a new nickname for the Wolves number five.

He said: “I’m really happy with him. We spoke about him on the podcast last week and I said, if you’re a fan, and you’re not a Marshall Munetsi fan in yourself and you’re one of those fans who wants other people playing – just watch him.

“Just watch Munetsi for 10 minutes of a match and what he does. And if you follow him around, and you see how much he helps other players – I call him The Facilitator – he makes other players better around him.

“I thought he had a really good game (against Brighton). There’s moments in there where he gives the ball away. But the stuff he does off the ball far outweighs those little moments.”

Munetsi is overly criticised

We know that Munetsi is not a technical player. Even Pereira himself has admitted that.

He is not in the team to create chances or dance through defences – he plays for his pressing, and to force mistakes from the opposition.

Munetsi must be a joy to play with because of how much work he gets through and Edwards’ nickname for the star is appropriate – he does help those around him to play more effectively.

Munetsi is still questioned quite a lot by some fans. But it is clear that Pereira adores his profile and what he brings to the table, and he will surely continue to feature heavily.
