The key transfer mistake Fosun must learn from at Wolves, it’s crucial to keeping Vitor Pereira

As the 2024/25 campaign draws to a close, Wolves fans will be wondering what is on the horizon and whether Vitor Pereira can continue his early success at Molineux.

Pereira has done a magnificent job to take Wolves from the threat of relegation and marooned in the bottom three to almost safe for another campaign.

Wolves’ 2-1 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday saw them move 12 points clear of the bottom three with just seven matches remaining.

Jamie Carragher has hailed Pereira, claiming the Portuguese boss has done a ‘superb’ job since arriving in Wolverhampton, with the 56-year-old deserving of such plaudits.

But, despite doing fantastically to drag Wolves to safety, a huge summer transfer window awaits, and it will determine whether the future at Molineux is bright.

Fosun didn’t replace Pedro Neto and Max Kilman in 2024

Wolves have been going backwards as a club since qualifying for the Europa League under Nuno Espirito Santo for the final time in 2020.

The Old Gold have constantly flirted with the idea of relegation but luckily done just enough to avoid it, with three worse teams often going down instead of them.

Worryingly, most of their issues have stemmed from selling some of their best players without replacing them.

Fosun operate on a self-sustaining model, which means they rely on capital from player sales to invest in the squad instead of pumping their own cash into the club.

In the summer of 2024, supporters saw this strategy in full action as Max Kilman was sold to West Ham and Chelsea signed Pedro Neto for £54 million, two crucial players in the squad.

Admittedly, no one could stand in their way – particularly Neto – but Fosun could have used some of that cash to invest in replacements.

Unfortunately, Wolves were left short defensively at the start of the campaign while they attempted to replace Neto with Carlos Forbs, who has turned out to be a huge flop.

Fosun must learn from their previous mistakes and show some ambition in the transfer window. That means using potential money from Matheus Cunha to sign a replacement, as failing to replace the Brazilian’s 15 goals this term could be detrimental not only to the club but also to Pereira’s future.

When Wolves could give Vitor Pereira a new contract

Previous Wolves managers have struggled to work under the tight budget at the club, including Gary O’Neil, who wasn’t dealt the best hand.

But, for the Wanderers to enjoy success in 2025/26, the owners must invest money into the squad and hand Pereira the luxury of signing some quality players.

Ultimately, he is the correct man to drive the Old Gold forward, but financial backing is required, and that could result in the Portuguese tactician staying for the long-term.

As exclusively revealed by Graeme Bailey to Molineux News, Wolves could offer Pereira a new contract at the end of this year if he keeps up this current form.

“Wolves are quite happy with Pereira, I think early next season, if he has a good start, they’ll look at doing that quite quickly,” Bailey said.

“I don’t think it’ll be over the summer. But I know it is something that’s in their thoughts; they are aware that he’s only got a year left.”

An abundance of talent signed, and a new deal for the manager could be the perfect recipe for a successful 2025/26 season.
