The injuries Matt Doherty and Rodrigo Gomes sustained as Wolves await scan results

Wolves were given a double injury blow as Matt Doherty and Rodrigo Gomes had to be substituted against Chelsea on Wednesday night, and there has been an update on the injuries they have sustained.

Matt Doherty started the game as captain but had to be withdrawn after just 19 minutes, with Rodrigo Gomes taking his place.

When the second half resumed, the Portuguese player was nowhere to be seen, with Ladislav Krejci then entering the game in his place, and it was not clear if it was tactical or forced.

Vitor Pereira then confirmed Doherty and Gomes were injured, but the head coach did not share any more details.

However, now journalist Liam Keen has provided an update on the kind of injury both players picked up.

Matt Doherty’s and Rodrigo Gomes’ injuries revealed

Journalist Liam Keen has revealed the injuries that Wolves duo Matt Doherty and Rodrigo Gomes have sustained as the club awaits the severity via tests.

It was not ideal for Vitor Pereira for two of his key players to go off injured, particularly two who can play at right-back or right wing-back.

Speaking on the Express and Star podcast, Keen said, “Doc [Doherty] came off in about the 19th minute with a knee injury; he was replaced by Rodrigo Gomes, who then came off at half-time, and he sort of hobbled off. He didn’t look particularly great with a groin injury.

“They are awaiting the tests to determine the severity of those two injuries, but yeah, it doesn’t sound particularly great. Those two you would expect to probably be out at the weekend.”

Hopes around Molineux will be that the two injuries are not severe and were simply knocks or precautions.

At the moment, it is not clear the extent of Matt Doherty’s knee issue, but with Rodrigo Gomes, if it was a groin tear rather than just tightness, the worst-case scenario could be a spell of three months on the sidelines.

Let’s hope Vitor Pereira can issue a positive update in his pre-Fulham press conference, as Wolves are not in a position to be without two of their right-sided players for an extended period.

Especially with the African Cup of Nations around the corner.

Big blow for Wolves if both injuries are longer term

Wolves will be without Jackson Tchatchoua for a period across December and January.

The Cameroonian fullback will be away just before Christmas for AFCON, with him potentially away all the way until the middle of January depending on how well Cameroon competes.

If both Doherty and Gomes are out long-term, then Ki-Jana Hoever could be the Wanderers’ only right-back option come December.

Hoever has not been in the fans’ good books recently, and the prospect of him starting a string of games, including fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester United, is not ideal.
