Gary O’Neil impressed with his approach to Wolves pre-season training in Marbella
Express and Star journalist Liam Keen is in Marbella overseeing Wolves’ start to pre-season.
After Wednesday’s training session, the Wolves expert penned his thoughts on the opening day in Spain, admitting that O’Neil left him impressed.
Keen described the manager as being ‘heavily involved’ with training, pointing out some areas that left him taken aback by the boss’ approach.
“Even when his coaches were leading a particular section, he [O’Neil] was heavily involved and a constant presence on the training pitch.
“During the passing drills he was encouraging his players to play with one touch and take risks.”
The journalist identified some of the areas that O’Neil wanted to see his players focus on, once again praising the coach’s attention to detail.
“The head coach was involved in changing the direction of play as he forced his defenders to react quickly, with everything focused on speed and aggression.
“It was an impressive display of leadership and a modern approach to coaching as O’Neil did not shirk his responsibility.”
O’Neil’s approach to pre-season training isn’t much of a surprise
After joining Wolves just days before the 2023/24 campaign commenced, O’Neil was stripped of the opportunity to gel with his players ahead of last term.
Now, the boss seems to be taking every chance to assess his side, with glimpses of how far the squad can progress under the boss shown last season.

Keen described O’Neil as being “in the thick of the action”, which is somewhat unsurprising considering the rave reviews the manager received from his players throughout his first year.
The former Bournemouth coach has prompted a host of Wolves players to up their levels, with many excelling last term despite everything that went against the club that summer.
It’s an exciting time for Wolves, as the squad get to work on improving ahead of what is poised to be a fascinating 2024/25 calendar.
