The honourable gesture Julen Lopetegui made during exit talks with cash-strapped Wolves

The summer of 2023 will be remembered by Wolves fans as one of the most challenging, frustrating and chaotic in recent memory.

The dust has now settled, and the club have brought in six new players, having offloaded several big names.

The biggest name of all to leave Molineux in the summer though, was Julen Lopetegui.

Lopetegui had been informed of the club’s financial concerns at the end of last season.

He had gone away to consider his future, but returned seemingly ready for the challenge.

However, Wolves appeared to move the goalposts on him regarding player incomings.

In the end, an agreement was reached for Lopetegui to leave around a month ago now.

And now, some interesting informational has come out about the Spaniard and what he did just before he left…

Julen Lopetegui offered to reduce settlement to help cash-strapped Wolves

The Telegraph have today produced a very intriguing article about Wolves’ summer.

And there is word of what Lopetegui did in the weeks before he actually departed.

Lopetegui had a huge salary of £8 million per year, and the 56-year-old is said to have made an ‘honourable gesture’ in reducing his settlement when leaving.

Talks to rip up his contract were ‘amicable’, and the Telegraph say that Lopetegui ‘agreed a settlement of less than a year’s money with two years left on his deal’.

And just today, there have been claims that Lopetegui could make a swift return to management.

Villarreal have been linked with him, after a difficult start for Quique Setien.

Fair play to Lopetegui but some fans won’t forget that Balague interview

Lopetegui does deserve a bit of credit for accepting a small sum of money for his exit at Wolves.

However, there will still be a lot of Wolves fans out there who are not happy with the way he left. The timing of his departure was very hard for many to accept.

And some don’t feel his interview with Guillem Balague was very professional, and actually something clever that helped him engineer his exit, rather than him just quitting and not receiving a penny.

It was a very messy situation, and Wolves fans are now hoping that it does not result in a really difficult season ahead.

It’s very possible that it will.
