Alfie Pond reacts to making Premier League debut vs Fulham
The fans were elated with the result however, there is a person who is arguably the most satisfied with the outing in the capital.
Wolves defender Alfie Pond was handed his Premier League debut by O’Neil just before full-time, taking his first steps in the top flight.
Pond has played for the Old Gold in the EFL Cup and built on his hopes of a breakthrough by officially becoming a Premier League player.
After the win at Craven Cottage, the 20-year-old shared his thoughts on the career-defining moment, revealing he was ‘buzzing’ to get some minutes.
“It all happened so quickly, I think after the fourth goal went in the gaffer said ‘Get yourself ready’.
“I was buzzing when he said that and I couldn’t wait to get on even though it was for a couple of minutes,” Pond said on the Wolves Express podcast.
While the youngster was delighted to get a brief taste of Premier League football, the defender played down his debut with reference to his journey so far.
“It’s just building blocks every day even training and stuff. Coming into the first team for the last month or so, it’s just trying to build every day,” he said.
Pond predicted his Premier League debut
Having been around the first team this season, there was a clear indication that O’Neil values Pond’s talent.
While training at the top level was one indicator, the 20-year-old admitted that he actually predicted his debut was coming for another reason.
“After the Brighton game, I knew there were a few injuries that might crop up with being only four in that position,” Pond revealed.
“I knew I had to keep myself ready and hope that the opportunity would come and it did. I’ve got to take each opportunity as it comes and do the best I possibly I can.”
O’Neil is incredibly short in central defence, which is something the club aim to fix as Wolves aim to sign a defender in January as a priority.
For now, the shortage comes as a positive for fringe players such as Pond, who will be relishing life in the first team.
