The four reasons why Joao Gomes agreed to sign Wolves contract extension

Joao Gomes has signed a new five-year contract extension, keeping him at Wolves for the foreseeable future.

The Brazilian has committed his long-term future to Molineux and, although there is some uncertainty surrounding others, will remain a key figure next season, and presumably, beyond.

Why Joao Gomes agreed Wolves contract extension

Joao Gomes‘ signature is a real coup for Vitor Pereira, who, along with Andre and new signing Marshall Munetsi, now has a solid midfield basis to build the rest of his Wolves first team around.

Joao Gomes’ performances since joining Wolves have been a real positive.

Speaking to the official Wolves website, Pereira said: “I’m very happy because Joao is a team player. He gives every time 100 per cent, in training, in the games, and he has the quality to help this team and this club to make the next step.

“At the end of the game he’s given everything for the team, defending, attacking, supporting the teammates, and this is what we need in our team, this is the spirit we need at this club. We must come to Wolverhampton with this hunger, this spirit to help the team, help the club to grow up.

“He’s very important because he’s a midfielder with physicality and the power to run for 90 minutes, and he’s young. He has big potential and can be a top player.”

And according to Molineux News sources, who are very close to the player, the South American’s decision to pen a new deal was made up of four factors:

Joao Gomes is admired by Spurs, but his latest deal, which runs until 2030 and includes a one-year extension, has ended all speculation.

Matheus Cunha who?

Of course, Joao Gomes’ decision to extend his Wolves contract is some of the best news supporters have received all season, but there remain clouds of uncertainty over one of his teammates.

Despite signing a new contract in January and denying his recent comments about a summer transfer, Matheus Cunha is expected to leave the club at the end of the season.

Believed to have a minimum release clause in his contract worth £62.5 million, Cunha is attracting all the top clubs.

Nottingham Forest are expected to launch an early bid for Cunha but it remains to be seen if the Brazilian forward will give the green light to a move to the City Ground.

Irrespective of what Cunha decides, though, all the focus will rightfully be on Joao Gomes, who has remained a shining light in what has otherwise been a miserable campaign, shrouded by controversies and ill-disciplined outbursts.
