The exclusive club Matheus Cunha could join by scoring for Wolves against Manchester United

All eyes will be on the starting lineup for Wolves when they face off against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Vitor Pereira has named the same team in five successive matches, and during that time, Wolves have drawn against Everton and beaten Southampton, Ipswich Town, West Ham, and Tottenham Hotspur.

For four of those matches, Cunha was suspended, receiving a punishment from the FA after being shown a red card for lashing out at Milos Kerkez in their FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth.

The 25-year-old returned from his suspension against Tottenham, although Pereira sent a clear message to the Brazilian by starting him on the bench, which ultimately fuelled a response from the centre-forward.

Cunha scored in the second half against Spurs as Wolves secured a 4-2 victory, and that placed him on the verge of an incredible feat.

Matheus Cunha can become the third Brazilian in Premier League history to score 15 goals in a single campaign

Cunha’s attitude and mentality may have been questioned on several occasions this term but his talent hasn’t been.

The former Atletico Madrid sharp-shooter is enjoying a career-best return with 16 goals in all competitions.

Most of those strikes have been invaluable for Wolves in the battle for survival, and now the forward is on the verge of achieving something special.

As per BBC Sport, a goal for Cunha against Manchester United – or in the remaining matches this term – would see him join Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli as the only Brazilians to hit 15 Premier League goals in one campaign.

Firmino achieved that feat on one occasion for Liverpool, striking 15 times in the 2017/18 season, while Martinelli was in a rich vein of form at Arsenal during 2022/23 as the 23-year-old scored 15.

So, Cunha only needs two more goals from his remaining six matches to become the top-scoring Brazilian in a single league campaign, highlighting his incredible talent.

What Ruben Amorim said about Cunha interest

A remarkable campaign at Molineux has only sparked speculation surrounding his future, as several big clubs want to sign Cunha this summer, and one of those is Manchester United.

Cunha’s agent has reportedly spoken to Man United over a possible move to Old Trafford, and the Europa League semi-finalists will get a closer look at their transfer target in Sunday’s clash.

Ahead of the game, Ruben Amorim was asked about interest in Cunha, and he remained coy on the links, saying: “I just remember about Matheus [Cunha], that he is scoring a lot of goals. It is just that.”

It seems the Portuguese boss wants to keep the cards close to his chest, with Cunha set for an audition against United this weekend.
