The damning stat which suggests Gary O’Neil is Wolves’ worst manager of the modern era

The Wolves’ managerial job has been somewhat of a poisoned chalice since Nuno Espirito Santo left the club at the end of the 2020/21 season.

Several managers have tried and failed to get Wolves to compete in the top half of the Premier League table, including Bruno Lage, Julen Lopetegui and now Gary O’Neil.

The highest the Old Gold have placed since Nuno Espirito Santo departed the club was 10th achieved by Lage in the 2021/22 campaign.

In the years post-Nuno, managers haven’t been helped by the issues Wolves have had with PSR, which have forced them to sell their most valuable assets along with Fosun gatekeeping funds.

But, most supporters agree that the current boss O’Neil should be doing better than he is, and one alarming statistic suggests he could be the club’s worst manager in the modern era.

Gary O’Neil’s win percentage at Wolves is worse than Paul Lambert

Although the Old Gold looked to have turned a corner in recent weeks by securing wins over Southampton and Fulham, their optimism soon came crashing down on Saturday.

Wolves were beaten 4-2 by Bournemouth at home, and after the game, fans called for O’Neil to be sacked once again and understandably so.

The Wanderers have been shocking defensively all season long, conceding the most Premier League goals this term (33) and showing no signs of improving.

Supporters feel that O’Neil isn’t the right man to turn their campaign around and keep them in the top flight.

Indeed, their anger towards the 41-year-old is justified, as O’Neil has the worst win percentage of any Wolves manager in the modern era, including Paul Lambert.

O’Neil may have two games to save Wolves job

Lambert is regarded as one of the worst managers in Wolves history, having finished 16th in the Championship during the 2016/17 campaign.

While his figure of 42.4% doesn’t make for awful reading, it makes it even worse knowing that O’Neil is rock bottom for win percentage when comparing the previous five managers.

Given the fans have already lost faith in O’Neil and the fact Wolves are battling relegation, the Englishman have just two games to save his job – the clash against Everton on Wednesday and trip to West Ham next weekend.

Ultimately, if the Old Gold fail to take at least three points from those fixtures, Fosun may have no other choice but to pull the trigger.
