Wolves are likely to suffer relegation – but Rui Pedro Silva is buoyed about the long term.

Wanderers’ fate looks all but certain right now despite an upturn in performances and results, but the mood behind the scenes points in a different direction.

The correlation between performances and internal standards has become clearer in recent weeks. Training intensity and day-to-day expectations have continued to rise under Rob Edwards.

That shift has gradually translated into points on the board, and Wolves fans are now starting to believe in the long term project.

And one man who thinks the future is bright is Rui Pedro Silva, who’s given his first interview since returning to the club in December.

Silva’s return to Wolves went down very well with fans at the time.

He was seen as an integral part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s coaching staff the first time around, and is a respected figure at Compton Park.

It is perhaps no coincidence that Wolves have looked better since he came back.

But Wolves have made a number of changes to prepare for the long term – and Silva has praised the direction the club are going in. And one line especially sticks out.

He said (via Wolves official): “When we started here, it was not the best moment, they were trying to change things. Even in our first days here, there were some doubts, the times that you know you’ve got pains to grow up, there will be bad moments, but the people at the base inside are ready to grow up again and to be big again. There’s no doubt inside of the club, the feeling is still here.

“The club is not only the players, it’s about all the staff, most of the time a club stays because of the base that you’ve got from the players, but also the staff around the club.

“I think they’ve got the winning mentality inside of the club, and when the players come and the staff can transmit this winning mentality into the players, this keeps on going. It was just a bad moment in the career of the club, and for sure we’re going to be back again.”

Rob Edwards has shifted the culture at Wolves

Silva’s comments come after it was recently reported that the environment at the training ground has already changed for the better under Edwards, who is said to have improved the culture at Wolves. Standards, organisation and daily structure have all been raised.

It was also recently revealed that Wolves are running more under Edwards – a tell-tale sign he has really gotten through to the players.

His work has created a clearer framework for players to operate within. Silva’s comments align with those changes, pointing to a squad that understands the demands being set.

The club will go through a painful moment at the end of the season. But the comments of Silva and the groundwork Edwards has already laid are certainly reasons to be encouraged about the long term.
