‘Talented boy’: Gary O’Neil believes Wolves are genuinely sitting on ‘one hell of a player’

Matheus Cunha appears to have emerged as an early favourite for new Wolves manager Gary O’Neil.

The Brazilian was the star of the show during last night’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Wanderers lost to the Red Devils despite putting in one of their best performances for a long time.

Wolves were bang at it at Old Trafford, and had an incredible 23 shots on goal.

But it just wouldn’t go in for the visitors.

And then, of course, Wolves were denied a clear penalty after a foul by Andre Onana on Sasa Kalajdzic.

But Wolves fans are encouraged with what they saw, and especially so with Cunha.

And it looks as though he will be having a huge part to play this season…

Gary O’Neil raves over Matheus Cunha after his performance against Manchester United

Cunha was outstanding last night.

He was absolutely tireless and carried the ball amazingly well through the lines.

At times, the United players could not get near him.

He had about four decent chances to score, and that was all that was really missing from his performance.

O’Neil was delighted with the South American’s showing, and cannot wait to work with him this season.

He said (via The Athletic): “He missed a lot of training this week with a slight issue, so we were never going to get 90 minutes out of him, but he caused Manchester United some real problems.

“Lots of things he can still improve and he knows what they are. I’ve tried to help him as much as I can and we’re going to keep pushing because there is one hell of a player in there.

“But we do need to still work and get him to a level I think he can be at to be able to do what he did more regularly, add a goal at the end of it, be able to do it for 90 minutes and lead the team.

“But he’s a talented boy that played a big part in a good performance for us.”

Matheus Cunha is one of Wolves’ best and most important players

Cunha was just magnificent against United.

The only thing missing from his performance was a goal.

It was easily his best showing in a Wolves shirt to date, and fans will now hope he can build on this display.

He’s one of the club’s best and most important players now.

That ball carrying ability is fantastic, as is his ability to link play and bring others around him into the game.

It’s just the finishing that needs work right now. So one wonders if O’Neil will consider getting Fabio Silva up there with him.
