Steve Davis reacts to Julen Lopetegui appointment by Wolves

Steve Davis will soon be handing over the reins to Julen Lopetegui at Wolves.

The interim manager has been in charge of the first-team now for over a month, flanked by James Collins and Tony Roberts.

The board put him in place following the sacking of Bruno Lage, while they searched for a successor.

Lopetegui was their man from the beginning, but initially he said now.

Another rejection followed from the QPR manager Mick Beale and the club then put out a statement that informed supporters Davis would be in interim charge until 2023.

But Wolves managed to make a breakthrough with Lopetegui last week, and he was announced on Saturday.

He’ll officially start work next Monday, meaning Davis has just a couple of games left as interim boss.

He’s done a decent job, even if results have not been good.

It has been good to see the level of performance having improved in the last few weeks, and his contributions should be praised.

Davis is ready to step aside for Lopetegui, and delivered a rave review of the Spaniard.

He said (via Wolves official): “All of the staff are equally delighted as the supporters with the appointment and we look forward to seeing what he will bring to the club.

“He’s a high calibre coach with a lot of experience of working in international football and with top clubs in Europe and that’s going to be invaluable for us. He and his team will come here with a job to do and, from my point of view as a coach and as a fan, it’s a very exciting appointment.

“He will get the utmost support from myself, James and everyone else within the football club, and I look forward to meeting him later this week.”

Lopetegui is a very exciting appointment indeed, and he’ll need Davis’ help in the coming weeks

It still feels somewhat surreal that Lopetegui is the new Wolves manager.

It really is, on paper, a cracking appointment by the club, and he has the potential to do really good things.

Davis’ contributions have been admirable in recent weeks.

He made some mistakes along the way. But he’s instilled positivity into the squad, and he did get that one win against Nottingham Forest.

Davis will be an important figure to Lopetegui in these next few weeks whilst the World Cup is on.

A transition period is now taking place, and Davis can help bring Lopetegui up to speed with everything and anything about his new players.

The pair may well chat about January, with Davis having suggested the new man should be looking to make some additions in January.
