Steve Bruce sets points target for next Wolves manager after Vitor Pereira

Steve Bruce has outlined a path to survival for Wolves after Vitor Pereira’s dismissal.

Things at Molineux are very much focused on the here and now, after news of Pereira being sacked by Wolves emerged.

Priority number one is getting a new manager in, but some thought should be spared for what exactly the rest of the season looks like after that decision is made.

Gary O’Neil is the surprise frontrunner for the Wolves job, in positive talks as we speak. But whoever does get the nod has a significant challenge to face, and Bruce has laid out the details.

Steve Bruce has his say on Wolves’ survival chances

Bruce has fought through his fair share of relegation scraps over the years, and has a better idea than most of what it takes to stay in the Premier League.

Now a regular guest on talkSPORT, Bruce reacted to the news of Pereira’s dismissal and shared his thoughts on the battle at the bottom that faces the next Wolves manager.

He says: “If you’re a club like Wolves, you know where you’re going to be—in the bottom half of the division — I think you need at least 10 wins. Right now, I think Wolves haven’t won just yet. So they’ve got to win 10 out of the next 28.”

That’s a lofty target, but a realistic take on just how difficult a relegation escape will be.

As for whether Bruce backs the Old Gold to do it, he says: “Yes, of course it’s possible. But it leaves them a mountain to climb, doesn’t it really? Uh, but look, yeah, can you get on a bit of a run? Can somebody give them a lift? That’s what they’re all looking for.

“But I think we all understand, as I said at the top of the interview there, that if you’re going to take the head coach’s role or whatever, then you know that you’ve got to make an instant impact.”

Wolves need a new manager bounce

There’s a reason Pereira was sacked. Well, there are a few reasons. But the main one is that the trajectory Wolves are on will see them in the Championship next season.

Bruce is bang-on about needing ten wins to stand a chance, but they need to start coming sooner rather than later.

These next five games are going to be extremely tough, with Wolves clear underdogs in all of them.

But if we get to the 9th of December without at least two wins, whoever is at the helm will be under just as much scrutiny as Pereira was. After that, it’s Liverpool and Arsenal in a three-game stretch, which doesn’t sound like the makings of a merry Christmas.

We’re still waiting to know who is going to take the reins, but whoever it is will have to get Wolves winning, and fast.
