Stephen Warnock praises Wolves’ appointment of Lopetegui

Julen Lopetegui had his first press conference as Wolves’ new head coach earlier today – and pundit Stephen Warnock has praised the club for his appointment.

The Spaniard faced reporters to give his first thoughts, after being announced as the new manager earlier this month.

Lopetegui officially started work today, and has a lot of work to do.

The club is currently bottom of the Premier League table, having won just two games and scored eight goals.

It has been a real struggle so far, and it’s a big job for Lopetegui to turn things around.

But fans are optimistic. Lopetegui arrives at Molineux with a fantastic reputation, having done brilliant work at FC Porto, Spain and Sevilla.

Lopetegui, who also briefly managed Real Madrid, agreed to join Wolves following an improvement with his situation back home involving his father’s health.

Lopetegui spoke a bit about that today, and also confirmed that he had signed a three-year contract with the club.

On Sky Sports News, former Premier League defender Stephen Warnock gave his thoughts about the appointment after the broadcaster had played a clip of him speaking.

He believes Wanderers have made a fantastic appointment.

He said (12:29pm): “The name, the reputation, straight away it gets respect as soon as you walk into that changing room.

“If I’m a player and I walk into that, I want to learn from him. I want to know why he’s been a good manager, why he got the Real Madrid job, why he got the Spain job. You get them because you’re a good manager and you’ve got good coaching ability.

“I think from a player’s point of view, exciting.”

Lopetegui is exactly the kind of person Wolves needed to bring in after Bruno Lage.

With Lage, it sometimes felt – especially towards the end – that he just didn’t have the profile and stature to really get through to the players.

Lopetegui comes to Wolves having achieved a lot.

To have managed Spain and Real Madrid, and to have won the Europa League with Sevilla shows huge pedigree.

Without doubt, the players are going to love working with him. In the video of Lopetegui going about Compton on his first day, you can see how respectful some of the players were towards him.

Having a good relationship with the players is going to be key to getting the best out of them.
