‘Special player’: Mario Lemina and others hail 2020 Wolves signing after display vs Manchester City

Wolves were absolutely superb against Manchester City on Saturday – and one man who’s rightly been coming in for a lot of praise is Toti Gomes.

Toti was brought into the starting XI by Gary O’Neil, replacing the suspended Jean Ricner-Bellegarde.

O’Neil switched up the formation, going with a back three from the start in the Premier League for the first time.

And this decision paid off.

Wolves were brilliant in their defensive work, and kept Erling Haaland very quiet.

And there was an attacking threat with the speedy trio of Pedro Neto, Hwang Hee-chan and Matheus Cunha.

It was just a great all-round display – and several Wolves stars sent messages to Toti after the game…

Toti – who signed for Wolves in 2020 from Estoril – didn’t enjoy his best night against Ipswich Town.

But he got the nod from O’Neil against City – and he fully vindicated the manager’s decision.

Toti was just so solid on the left of the back three.

He posted on Instagram after the game: “That’s how we rock at Molineux! Unreal atmosphere this afternoon. Let’s keep pushing!”

Many fans replied, as did several Wolves players.

Mario Lemina gave Toti some high praise, writing ‘Special player’.

Nelson Semedo called the 24-year-old a ‘Machineee’.

And an elated Neto wrote ‘Let’s gooooo’.

Toti was brilliant

Toti did have an off night against Ipswich but he was back to being the player Wolves fans know and adore on Saturday against City.

It made sense for him to come into the team to provide a bit more solidity against a world-class attack.

It was so good to see him play so well against an elite side.

Toti is just a fantastic player.

He doesn’t always start, but he’s the kind of player every Premier League squad needs.
