‘Something special’: Matt Hobbs admits he’s been totally ‘blown away’ by Wolves man

Wolves sporting director has lavished praise on Gary O’Neil, branding him ‘something special’.

O’Neil got the biggest win of his managerial career on Saturday against Manchester City.

Wolves ran out 2-1 winners at Molineux to hand City their first Premier League defeat of the season.

It was a brilliant performance from Wolves, with O’Neil getting his game plan spot on.

It was important for Wolves to respond to the embarrassing defeat to Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup just days before.

Few people really expected Wolves to get even a draw, let alone beat arguably the best side in the world.

Yesterday, Hobbs appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live’s The Monday Night Club to talk about the result, and he hailed O’Neil for the work he has done so far…

So it was perhaps to be expected that Wolves would have a challenging first couple of months.

But the result against City feels like a bit of a turning point.

And Hobbs thinks extremely highly of the 40-year-old.

On the hiring process, he said: “Gary impressed in his presentation and his vision for the team and the transition we wanted to make and I’ve been blown away by him. He’s something special.”

Hobbs stated in his interview that Wolves interviewed four candidates for the job.

One of those other candidates was thought to be Lee Carsley.

There is something there with O’Neil

It’s still very early days, but there are reasons to be positive about Wolves under O’Neil.

The result against City has really changed the mood at the club.

It was just a brilliant performance, and one made possible by the tactical awareness of O’Neil.

He’s still very much working things out at Wolves having come in at such a late stage.

To have done what he’s done so far with that in mind is impressive, and Wolves fans will hope to see him build now.
