‘Some problems’: Gary O’Neil admits 24-year-old Wolves player struggled last night

Wolves have crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Ipswich Town, having lost 3-2 at Portman Road.

Wanderers’ run in the cup is over already, as they came unstuck against the Championship side, after going 2-0 up.

Hwang Hee-chan gave Wolves an early lead with a great strike.

Toti Gomes then doubled the lead with just 15 minutes gone.

But from 20 minutes onwards, Wolves were really poor.

Ipswich pulled one back through Omari Hutchinson, before Freddie Ladapo equalised.

Jack Taylor scored the winner just before the hour mark.

O’Neil had rung the changes from Saturday against Luton Town, and there was a debut last night for summer signing Santiago Bueno.

After the game, the head coach gave his honest thoughts about the Spaniard’s first performance…

He still hasn’t had a great deal of time with his new teammates, and hasn’t trained too much either, having gone away with Uruguay for the international break.

So that saw him actually have a tough debut at Portman Road.

O’Neil said (Express & Star): “I thought he did OK. There were points were Ipswich caused him some problems, first game, new team, new partnership, so not an easy one to come into, but one he needs.

“I need to see him, and he needs to play with his teammates.”

Bueno needs time to bed in

You can tell from O’Neil’s assessment that the head coach felt Bueno struggled.

It was perhaps always going to be a little tricky for him, given he’s only just arrived and did miss that valuable training time over the international break.

He will need some time to bed in.
