Some Blackburn Rovers fans ‘would love’ former Wolves manager to replace John Eustace

Wolves booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup after beating Blackburn Rovers and an interesting development has since emerged.

Wolves’ 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers saw them book a trip to Bournemouth in the next round with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

The game ended up being a routine win for Vitor Pereira’s men thanks to goals from Joao Gomes and Matheus Cunha. However, before the match had even kicked off, the hosts were distracted by a bizarre development.

It was reported that Derby County had approached John Eustace for their managerial vacancy after sacking Paul Warne.

Eustace is now set to take over at Pride Park despite them sitting inside the relegation zone while Blackburn are in fifth position.

Interestingly, one former Wolves manager is an early candidate to replace Eustace at Blackburn and some Rovers supporters are even calling for him.

Some Blackburn fans want Gary O’Neil to replace John Eustace

Gary O’Neil was sacked by Wolves in December after they were beaten 2-1 by Ipswich Town. The Englishman spent 16 months in the dugout at Molineux but his time ended on a sour note.

The 41-year-old has been out of work since being dismissed two months ago however, O’Neil was linked with the Millwall job shortly after being given the axe.

Now, he’s been tipped to replace Eustace at Blackburn once his departure is confirmed, and several fans would be happy if he was appointed.

“Gary O’Neil any day of the week,” one fan wrote while another replied: “Would love O’Neil. But it will be Gerrard I suspect.”

“Any of Gary O’Neil or Steve Cooper,” a third commented and a fourth agreed: “O’Neil or Cooper.”

“O’Neil all the way,” a sixth demanded while another replied: “Gary O’Neil would be my choice.”

Why O’Neil would be reluctant to take Blackburn job

O’Neil is a popular choice among Rovers fans, though history suggests he could be reluctant to take the job if it was offered to him.

During his time at Molineux, O’Neil had to work under the ownership of Fosun, who are known for penny-pinching and not backing their manager.

The reason Eustace is presumably walking out of the job at Ewood Park is because of Blackburn’s owners. The Venky’s have shown they’re inept at running the club and don’t back their manager, hence why Eustace is walking out on a side in the play-offs for a relegation battle.

Having worked under the tight constraints of Fosun at Wolves, perhaps O’Neil would want to operate under a stable ownership instead.
