Sky Sports pundits agree over controversy Wolves v Southampton as former PL ref gives verdict

Wolves recorded their first Premier League win of the season against Southampton, but there were a couple of controversies in the game.

It was the Matheus Cunha show, as the Brazilian scored and assisted in the 2-0 win at Molineux, which potentially saved Gary O’Neil’s job.

Fosun would have had a huge decision to make had Wolves not won, but O’Neil looks like he will now be in charge to face Fulham after the international break.

Wolves didn’t put in a particularly great performance, with Southampton not making all their possession count.

Wolves may well have got slightly lucky on a couple of occasions, with two decisions coming under the microscope.

One saw Southampton have a goal by Ryan Manning ruled out, and Sky pundits Sue Smith and Stephen Warnock are in agreement over the incident.

After Pablo Sarabia had put Wolves 1-0 up, Southampton then thought they had equalised.

Saints left-back Manning lashed the ball into the top corner, and the goal was given on-field. But VAR intervened, and deemed there to be a foul on Nelson Semedo just before it went in.

Alan Shearer criticised the decision to disallow Southampton’s goal, describing it as ‘totally wrong’.

Today on Sky Sports, the incident was discussed and Sue Smith believes it should have stood. She said: “It should have been a goal. He watches it eight times and something gets put into his head. You watch something over and over and you’re looking for things that aren’t there. Semedo goes across him and it wasn’t a foul. The ref’s initial decision was no foul and he shouldn’t have questioned himself.”

Stephen Warnock agreed though, saying: “It’s obstruction by Semedo.”

But interestingly, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher thought VAR was right to chalk it off.

He said: “I thought a foul at the time. I expect the ref to give a foul. He has the best view. VAR alerted him to go to the monitor.”

Wolves deserved a slice of luck

Wolves fans won’t care one bit about Manning’s goal being ruled out, given how many controversial calls have gone against the club in recent months.

It is very possible that other officials might have awarded Southampton the goal.

Maybe Wolves did get away with one there, but it is about time Wanderers did, as opposed to getting stung.

The previous weekend against Crystal Palace saw Wolves get slightly fortuitous again when Jean-Philippe Mateta saw his late winner ruled out for a foul on Jose Sa. Andy Thompson and Lee Naylor both felt Wolves got lucky with that decision.

Perhaps the tide might be turning, and few can say Wolves don’t deserve a few contentious calls to go their way.
