Sky pundit Sue Smith wowed by Joao Gomes in Wolves’ win over Brentford

Joao Gomes came in for praise from Sue Smith on Gillette Soccer Saturday after Wolves’ 2-0 win over Brentford.

Julen Lopetegui masterminded a second straight victory in the Premier League for Wolves at Molineux to give some breathing space down at the bottom.

Diego Costa finally opened his account for Wanderers, stabbing home a Toti Gomes cross in the first-half.

Hwang Hee-chan came off the bench in the second-half to double Wolves’ advantage, and it was then a solid job until the end of the game.

Wolves were fully worth the three points, just as they were against Chelsea.

It was a brilliant display, with Wolves fighting hard from the first whistle. Some good football was played in parts as well.

It was really interesting see such a good performance from Wolves without Ruben Neves again.

The captain was serving the final game of his suspension and will be back available again next week.

It remains to be seen if Lopetegui will bring him straight back into the starting XI. Some fans are suggesting Wanderers have actually looked better without him.

Yesterday, Lopetegui once again went with Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes in the middle, with Matheus Nunes out wide and drifting inside.

It really worked – all three players were excellent on the day.

And £15 million January arrival Gomes again caught the eye, with Sky Sports pundit Smith praising him after the game.

She said: “You’ve got Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina, who’ve just go so much physicality, athleticism and quality on the ball. They really bossed the midfield areas. Defensively, they were really sound.

“Gomes has just got that athleticism, he wins the ball back, he’s really tenacious. But then when he’s on the ball, he’s got that quality as well.”

Joao Gomes is an amazing prospect for Wolves – he and Mario Lemina are fearsome together

It was another fantastic display yesterday from young Gomes, whom Wolves are very exited about.

The Brazilian looks to have settled now and is really showing his class in the middle of the park.

His knack for winning the ball back is so impressive.

Between him and Lemina, Wolves have two absolute warriors in the engine room.

Wanderers fans have been used to seeing the grace and creativity of Joao Moutinho and Neves over the years.

This partnership is very different, but clearly extremely effective and fans ought to be very encouraged about potential life after the Portuguese duo.
