Simon Jordan responds when asked if Vitor Pereira contract decision will come back to haunt Wolves

Wolves handed Vitor Pereira a new contract last week somewhat controversially.

It was a move that had been in the pipeline for weeks, with Vitor Pereira having done great work last term to keep the club safe.

Pereira also only had one year left on the deal he signed when he arrived.

So Wolves moved to tie him down, but some fans have questioned the timing of the new contract for Pereira, who had overseen four straight defeats in the Premier League.

That losing run then extended to five games at the weekend against Leeds United.

The Wolves hierarchy have certainly stuck their neck out with Pereira.

And yesterday on talkSPORT, former Crystal Palace owner turned pundit Simon Jordan gave his two cents about Wolves handing their manager a new deal amid such a poor run.

Pereira undeniably did a great job last season.

But in 2024/25, he had a much stronger squad, and there were also three teams in the division that were way worse.

Indeed, pundit Ally McCoist has expressed sympathy for Pereira after his Wolves squad was stripped this summer.

This time around, that doesn’t look to be the case, with Sunderland, Leeds and Burnley all getting points on the board.

It remains to be seen if the decision to hand Pereira a new contract will work out, or if another Gary O’Neil kind of situation will unfold.

On talkSPORT yesterday, Simon Jordan was asked whether the decision to given Pereira a new deal will come back to haunt the club.

He said (22/09, 12:37pm): “The evidence that was in front of their eyes was far more compelling two or three games at the beginning of the season.

“And the fact that the guy had done a decent job, and taken them from a difficult position where they were and they were struggling and losing control of their dressing room and potentially losing their position in the Premier League and turned it around quite well, suggested to me that they might have a good vision as to why they wanted to give him a new contract.

“The fact they’ve started poorly, he seems quite calm and composed about it all. He doesn’t seem to be fazed by it, maybe that’s experience, age and understanding that things will get better.

“But if it continues this way and they’ve got two points out of 10 games then all of a sudden they’ve given themselves a headache which is they’ve got a financial problem, which is if they really think he can’t continue then they’ve just given him a load more money. But that’s the nature of the beast.”

Wolves have taken a major gamble

No one is taking away from what Pereira did last season. The work he did to get points on the board and also totally change the culture was nothing short of amazing.

But Wolves have definitely taken a bit of a risk handing him a new contract, just as they did with O’Neil last season.

The club have attempted to bring about some stability, but it’s something that could actually result in more pressure.

Pereira has now been backed in a big way. Not only has he been given the new deal, but Domenico Teti also came in in the summer, and Wolves restructured their recruitment department around Pereira, who has the final say on recruits.
