Simon Jordan left completely rattled as Rob Edwards leaves Middlesbrough for Wolves

Wolves are ready for a new era, with Rob Edwards taking over from Vitor Pereira.

Vitor Pereira was sacked by Wolves the day after the team lost 3-0 to Fulham, and it was a decision that had been coming.

Pereira’s position became untenable, having had no clear direction for the team and no identity. He tried lots of different formations and player combinations and nothing would stick.

He had to go, and Rob Edwards will be his successor.

Edwards’ move to Wolves has not been without controversy.

Wolves have had to pay compensation worth around £2 million to prise Edwards away from Middlesbrough.

Boro fans have been left angered by Wolves’ move for Edwards – and they aren’t the only people who this has annoyed.

Edwards initially wouldn’t be drawn on the links to Wolves, which left some wondering if he would come.

Last week, he twice played down the talk publicly, but at the weekend there was a breakthrough after Boro stood him down for their game with Birmingham.

A number of people have already criticised Edwards for leaving Boro.

Alan Shearer said Edwards leaving was very harsh on Boro, and to the surprise of probably zero Wolves fans, Simon Jordan has now expressed his dismay.

He said on talkSPORT: “They would have been disappointed. They would not have been surprised about Wolves making overtures to their manager.

“What they would have looked for is their manager to have done precisely what he did in his press conference, which is basically distancing himself from that opportunity, and remind himself of the full glaze of the public domain that he was actually in a good job. And of course then what he’s done is the atypical thing that most managers do which is ‘But I’d like to go and have a chat with them’.

“Once you’ve said that, then where do you go from there?

“I think they’re (Wolves) in freefall. I think they don’t have a squad of players that’s going to keep them in the Premier League. I think they don’t have a culture motivated to be able to give managers the kind of support that they need on the field.

“Because all their best players are being sold left, right and sold, because they’ve got to fulfill different outcomes than perhaps the original motivation of Fosun and their ownership model. I hope he gets what he deserves. I hope Wolves get relegated and he goes down with them and suffers a consequence of it.”

Jordan went on to argue that Edwards had not ‘earned the right’ to leave Boro having only been there a very short time.

Jordan criticism of Edwards is overboard

It is understandable that Edwards is facing criticism for his decision to leave Middlesbrough to join Wolves.

However the comments of Jordan here are slightly over the top.

Last week, Jordan had warned Edwards off going to Wolves, so he was always going to take a dim view of this outcome.

But what he fails to understand is that this is a big opportunity in Edwards’ managerial career.

Yes, he’s been with Boro for a few months and impressed and also had supporters eating out of the palm of his hand with his comments about everyone at Boro being a family.

But Edwards has likely been waiting for some time for a shot at being Wolves’ first-team head coach, and he’s also undoubtedly going to be paid a lot more.

Wolves are, of course, in a lot of trouble right now. But it’s still a huge Premier League club with a lot of points to play for and Edwards obviously has an affinity with it.

For Jordan to also wish for Wolves’ relegation over this is a bit embarrassing.
