Significance for Wolves as Merseyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool descends into chaos

Wolves are gearing up for their next Premier League game against Liverpool – and there were significant developments last night.

Wanderers are looking to build on their positive past couple of weeks.

Wolves beat Aston Villa in the Premier League, before then going to Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup and winning at Ewood Park.

It’s Liverpool up next for Wolves and games don’t come too much harder.

The Reds have been superb this season and are currently top of the league.

But last night, they missed a chance to go nine points clear at the summit, with Everton scoring right at the death to make it 2-2 in the final Merseyside Derby ever at Goodison Park.

After the final whistle, chaos ensued and three red cards were issued to individuals from Liverpool.

After last night’s game, referee Michael Oliver brandished four red cards, with three of these going to individuals from Liverpool.

There was a flashpoint after Abdoulaye Doucoure celebrated in front of the travelling Liverpool fans.

Curtis Jones raced over and scrapped with Doucoure, unhappy with his antics. Both players received second yellow cards.

Then, Oliver sent off Slot as the Liverpool manager shook his hand, seemingly having said something.

Slot’s assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, was also sent off.

As reported by the Daily Mail, that now means assistant coach Johnny Heitinga is set to prowl the touchline for this weekend’s game with Wolves.

Pereira had suggested Slot was an ‘artist’ manager, and was seemingly looking forward to a duel with the Dutchman.

Merseyside Derby chaos may help Wolves

Last night’s Merseyside Derby was certainly a game the neutrals lapped up.

The scenes that unfolded at the end were certainly spicy, and it will now be interesting to see what effect this will have for Liverpool against Wolves on Sunday.

Not having Slot on the touchline, assuming his band comes into effect immediately, is a blow for them.

And the assistant not being around for them is also not ideal, and Heitinga doesn’t have a great deal of experience of actually leading. He did have a brief interim stint as manager of Ajax in the 2022/23 season.

And Jones may not have started against Wolves, but him being suspended is another potential blow for the Reds.
