Shock development as Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs shortlisted by Premier League rival

Reports suggest that Wolves could be at risk of losing sporting director Matt Hobbs to another Premier League club.

Hobbs has been a part of the project at Wolves since 2022, arriving to support on the transfer front and a range of other areas.

Having worked closely with Gary O’Neil, Hobbs was very welcoming to Vitor Pereira, offering full support to the Wolves manager.

It’s been a difficult ride for Hobbs at Wolves as the club continues to attempt to move away from the bottom three, which has emphasised the need for support in the transfer market.

Southampton approach Wolves for Matt Hobbs

Hobbs was criticised for his work in the summer transfer window at Wolves, as the sales of Pedro Neto and Max Kilman were questioned.

The sporting director turned things around to some degree as the Old Gold welcomed some top talent later in the window.

Midway through the 2024/25 campaign, the Wolves project has hit a critical point as the club aims to steer away from the relegation zone but, Hobbs’ future involvement is now in doubt.

The Sun have reported that Southampton have identified Hobbs as a candidate to take on the role at St Mary’s in what has been described as a ‘dramatic overhaul of backroom staff’.

It’s claimed that Hobbs has been approached for the role with the Saints, which would see him play a part across all of Sport Republic’s clubs.

Hobbs could oversee things at Southampton, Goztepe and Valenciennes if the proposed contact progresses, in what would signify significant change at Wolves.

The Old Gold do not need to be concerned about the development just yet, as it’s reported that Hobbs is not the only candidate on Southampton’s radar, with no deal agreed as of yet.

Wolves stance on Matt Hobbs interest

There are a lot of problems happening at Wolves, with fans wanting to see more from all areas of the club’s hierarchy.

Jeff Shi has come under fire from Wolves fans alongside Fosun and the chairman could come under more pressure if Hobbs were to leave.

That might not be the case however, as Wolves reporter Liam Keen shared an insight into the club’s stance on Southampton’s interest in Hobbs.

The Wolves expert shared that Hobbs is ‘set to stay’ at Molineux despite the emerging interest.

Change at the top is what Wolves fans have wanted to see for some time, however, Hobbs was not the figure first on the list of those needing to leave the club.
