Rui Borges is one of the names that emerged as a potential Vitor Pereira replacement for Wolves.
After Sunday’s news, all the discourse around Molineux is about who will step into the role and take on the task of dragging Wolves to safety.
Borges is one of five names shortlisted by Wolves, and his links to Jorge Mendes have added fuel to the rumours. Having replaced Ruben Amorim last season, Borges helped Sporting Lisbon to the title and is on course to do so again this season.
Wolves fans were concerned about the Borges links, seeing him as a ‘journeyman’ manager similar to the one who was just dismissed, and their concerns can be eased after an update from the Portuguese capital.

Rui Borges happy at Sporting Lisbon despite Wolves interest
The next few days are sure to be hectic with plenty of potential replacements being linked to the Wolves job.
Sporting are second in the league, looking to win a third consecutive title. Leaving the £17 million release clause to one side, the Portuguese boss isn’t looking for a change of scenery.
As Portuguese outlet Record reports: “The Sporting coach is fully focused on winning the three-peat and rules out the possibility of leaving Alvalade for a Premier League club.”
Wolves can scratch Borges off the list, as it appears he won’t be considering any offers.
We’re sure to hear a new name in his place, to go along with the numerous managers already in the mix.
Wolves should take their time in hiring, within reason
One thing we don’t need is a rushed decision on who to take over at Molineux.
Whoever comes in will have the same task posed to Pereira last season — dragging a struggling Wolves out of the Premier League depths. It’s not a decision the club can afford to get wrong.
Next up for Wolves is Chelsea, a tough proposition away at Stamford Bridge.
Ideally, the new boss will be on the sidelines for that outing, but it’s not do-or-die. As much as every game feels that way, no one will be looking at Wolves any less favourably if they lose to Enzo Maresca’s side again.
Better to be calculated in recruitment and bring in a manager who can bring success to Wolves this season and in the long run. After Chelsea comes yet another international break, which would be a good period for a new manager to settle in.
