Ruben Neves drops verdict as he assesses Wolves’ chances of staying up this season

Wolves managed to get their first win of the season against Southampton last weekend in what was a huge result for Gary O’Neil.

The Wolves manager was under huge pressure heading into the clash, and it was possible he could have been sacked had he not taken three points.

Some fans still want to see Wolves sack O’Neil despite the win though, with a few people not totally convinced about the performance.

Wolves were far from being at their best, with two bits of quality from Matheus Cunha proving to be the difference.

Wanderers may have also got slightly lucky when Ryan Manning’s goal was ruled out after a VAR intervention, and there were a couple of potential fouls in the build-up to Cunha’s goal.

But Wolves got the win and will move on – and it’s now about putting together a run and moving up the table – and Ruben Neves is confident of that.

On Saturday, Neves was back at Molineux for the first time since his move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

The former Molineux captain watched the game and also chatted to Wolves presenter Gemma Frith on the pitch at half-time.

Neves proved to be a good luck charm as Wolves got their first win against the Saints.

And the Portuguese is now expecting Wolves to build on the result. For him, there is no way the club will be in any danger come the end of the season.

He said (via Wolves official): “I’m sure of it. This game [against Southampton] is massive for the team, for the fans and for the club, because winning this game will give them the confidence that they need. Football is about confidence.

“We felt that on last season I was here. We were 10 points when we stopped for the World Cup and I remember when we came back, we won one and then two games, and we were flying. That’s the secret.

“It’s all about being confident when we are playing on the pitch, and with these fans, with this atmosphere at Molineux, I’m sure they will go up on the table.”

Neves also opened the door to returning to Wolves one day.

Wolves shouldn’t be near the bottom with this squad

When the current season reaches its business end, Wolves really shouldn’t be near the relegation zone. They could easily be in it or near it, but they shouldn’t be.

Wolves arguably have one of the strongest squads on paper out of all the teams currently in the bottom half of the table. Certainly, it’s better than the three promoted teams that came up, and a few other relegation rivals such as Everton and Crystal Palace.

Wolves have game-changers such as Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri, and have terrific midfield options such as Joao Gomes, Mario Lemina, Tommy Doyle and Andre, who admittedly is currently out of favour, but could yet have a big part to play.

The key thing for Wolves is going to be how well they defend from here on in. The team has conceded far too many goals so far, and that is clearly the biggest issue for Gary O’Neil to address.

Hopefully, he will be seeing the club bring in a top centre-back in January, which should’ve been done in the last window.
