Wolves booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round with a narrow 2-1 win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday.
The win was Wolves’ third in five games under new manager Vitor Pereira, who has injected some much-needed confidence back into the squad since replacing Gary O’Neil at Molineux.
Key to the turnaround in fortunes has been Pereira’s integration of lesser-seen squad members into the starting XI in recent weeks. One of those players has been Rodrigo Gomes, with the talented young wide player being brought into the lineup by the new manager after a lengthy spell of being consigned to the bench under O’Neil.
The Portugal under-21 international repaid Pereira’s faith in him on Saturday against Bristol City, scoring his side’s second goal in the eventual 2-1 and earning praise from fans who compared him to former Molineux favourite Pedro Neto.
Rodrigo Gomes hails ‘chemistry’ with Wolves teammate Goncalo Guedes after FA Cup third round win
Gomes’ finish in the 21st minute capped off a wonderfully well-worked move from Wolves, with fellow Portuguese national Guedes teeing the wing-back up expertly via a deft reverse pass in the lead-up to the goal.
It was of the many moments throughout the game in which Gomes and Guedes linked up well on the right-side of Wolves’ attack, prompting excitement within the fanbase about a potential new long-term partnership out on the flank between the two Portuguese players.

Speaking to the club’s press after the win, Gomes was asked about the link-up play with Guedes, revealing that it comes from the “chemistry” the pair share on the pitch:
“It’s like chemistry. I have really good chemistry with Guedes. We scored a very good goal, me and Guedes, and we need that pace. We need that place to score goals, to make an assist, to improve our game, and I feel very happy.
“In this area, I needed to score. I touched and I tried to score. It was a very good goal. I’m very, very happy.”
Vitor Pereira calls Rodrigo Gomes a player for the present at Wolves
Manager Pereira was full of praise for Gomes after the win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate, and was keen to hail the youngster as someone who can contribute to the first-team “now” despite his previous peripheral role under O’Neil:
“Rodrigo Gomes has fantastic energy , fast player , capacity to want to come back & help team the defensively , even when he was sick for five of six days, he was still Rodrigo when he played.
“He gives me two options on the right and the left – he’s a player for now.”
