Rodrigo Gomes may have just dropped a big hint for Vitor Pereira as Wolves eye new signings

The 2025/26 season could be an exciting one for Rodrigo Gomes, after he recently finished his first campaign in English football.

Rodrigo Gomes was Wolves’ first signing last summer, joining from SC Braga after a great loan spell at Estoril.

He arrived at Molineux for £12.7 million, and hopes were pretty high after he had shown himself to be one of the most exciting young players in the Portuguese top-flight in 2023/24.

But he was used quite sparingly under Gary O’Neil, who felt Rodrigo was a player for the future.

Vitor Pereira felt Rodrigo was ready though, and someone he wanted to give more minutes to.

Sadly though, the youngster struggled a bit with an injury in the second half of the season which limited his opportunities.

2025/26 could be a breakout season for Rodrigo, and the star has sent a subtle message to Vitor Pereira regarding his position.

We only got to see Rodrigo play as a wing-back a handful of times last term.

But it’s a position we know he can operate in, following his spell at Estoril. Most of the games he played for them were as a right wing-back.

Now, of course, Wolves are facing the prospect of losing Nelson Semedo, whose contract at Molineux officially expires today.

Wolves have been linked with replacements, but Rodrigo may well have thrown his hat into the ring to be the regular on the right side.

He said: “I played most of the season in that position and I feel very comfortable in that position. I like it a lot. I also like to play in the front too, but I like a lot to play in that position because I feel comfortable.

“It’s a different position because you have to defend more and run more, but I think I have the capacity to do that, and I feel good when in that position. It’s a position that gives me something different than when I play more in the front of the pitch, because you have to concentrate more on defending.”

We will see if Pereira decides that he’ll use Rodrigo more as a wing-back in 2025/26 – clearly, it’s a position he’d be more than happy to play in.

Ideally Wolves would replace Semedo with someone who is experienced.

But Rodrigo has shown he can play there, and potentially, if Pereira can see something in him in pre-season, he could save the club millions on a potential replacement.

There may also be scope for Rodrigo playing on the left side.

Last season we saw him replace Rayan Ait-Nouri a few times, so perhaps he and Hugo Bueno could be options to play at left wing-back.

But it would just be great to see him have more involvement in whatever capacity. Because Rodrigo is a player who always gives his all and is a very exciting talent.
