Rob Edwards makes promise to Wolves fans after awkward post-match scenes after Crystal Palace loss

Rob Edwards has promised fans there’s one thing he’ll keep doing as Wolves manager, regardless of the result.

Rob Edwards took his first game at the weekend, with Crystal Palace the opponents at Molineux.

It was always going to be a tough test, but Wolves gave a decent account of themselves for the first hour or so, before losing the game 2-0.

Ultimately, there was a gulf in quality between the two teams.

Are you confident Rob Edwards will help Wolves avoid relegation?

The big frustration about the result was that Palace didn’t need to be at their best to still win the game comfortably.

Edwards has a huge job on his hands – that, there is no denying.

If he is to have a chance of success, the uniting of the club will be paramount and after Saturday’s defeat, we saw Edwards take the players on a lap of appreciation – and it’s something that we will continue to see.

Rob Edwards explains why he’ll keep doing lap of appreciation

Much has been made of Edwards’ character, and how personable he is.

There is confidence at Wolves that Edwards can unite the club through his personality. But of course, it will take a lot more than that to get Wolves safe this season.

But for now Edwards must rely on what he can control, and it’s already clear that he’s trying to get the fans onside.

After the defeat to Palace on Saturday, Edwards led his defeated players around the pitch. It was slightly awkward, as many supporters had left the ground. Most of the players also only went to the South Bank, whereas Edwards went to all four stands.

But Edwards insists it’s something he’ll continue to do.

He said (via E&S): “They’re obviously standing there and trying to show their appreciation to one stand,” the head coach added.

“I think we’ve got to try and get around the whole stadium. I’ll always do that, win, lose or draw.

“The supporters will be really, really down and hurting at the moment, but we’ve got to try and show our appreciation because they are really important and they spend a lot of money and they follow us everywhere.

“It’s a difficult moment for the club, so I don’t want us just walking straight down the tunnel.”

Edwards’ idea is admirable, but many Wolves fans are apathetic

It is admirable that Edwards will insist in doing a lap of appreciation with his players no matter what the result is.

But it is potentially going to take some time for Edwards to make a real breakthrough.

Of course, fans will be more receptive to a lap of appreciation if Wolves have won the game.

When Wolves came calling, the decision was clear for Rob Edwards

“Wolves is a special club for me. It’s where I grew as both a player and a coach, it’s where my family calls home. It has always been my dream to come back and these opportunities do not come around too often.”

But if Wolves haven’t won, many fans likely aren’t going to be sticking around at the end of games, as much as many do back Edwards. It’s just that many have now reached the point of being past caring.

It is sad that apathy is now widespread in the fanbase. But lots of fans who pay their hard-earned money have simply grown tired of a Fosun-owned Wolves at this point.

So while Edwards’ idea is well intentioned, it remains to be seen just how many will truly appreciate it given the current state of affairs.
