Rob Edwards issues most significant Mateus Mane verdict yet ahead of Wolves’ clash with Liverpool

Wolves are gearing up to face Liverpool at the weekend – and Mateus Mane’s name will be one supporters are looking out for.

Wanderers are fresh from losing again in the Premier League last weekend, with Brentford triumphing 2-0 at Molineux.

It was another poor display from Wolves, who just couldn’t lay a glove on the Bees.

However, Mateus Mane was a shining light when he came on in the second-half, as has been the case pretty much every time he has come on.

For weeks now, there has been clamour for Mane to get his first Premier League start.

And ahead of the game with Liverpool Rob Edwards has dropped another glowing verdict on the teenager.

Mane has now come on as a substitute in each of the last five Premier League games for Wolves.

They have all ended in defeat for Wanderers, but Mane has caught the eye each time he’s featured.

After the game with Brentford, Edwards praised Mane, stating that he is now starting to look at home on the pitch for the Wolves first-team.

And ahead of facing Liverpool Edwards has talked up Mane again, which will fuel talk about that first Premier League start.

He said (via E&S): “You want to try and get the right balance. We see them every day, the whole week, and we know a lot more about every individual and circumstances, so there is always a bit of context around it as well, but we’ll always try and pick the right moments for younger players.

“Mane has done really well and is certainly getting to the point where you’re thinking the kid’s looking ready, it looks like he can affect the game, which is really encouraging for us. He’s getting more and more time as the weeks go on, and if he keeps going the way he is and keeps training the way he is, then he’ll earn his start, there’s no doubt about it.

I challenge you to disagree with me – Mateus Mane should 100% START vs Liverpool 🤔

“It’s a bit of sink or swim, and sometimes circumstances happen. Sometimes you get in and you just earn it, sometimes it’s because of injury and there’s a bit of circumstance around it. Right now, there’s one or two away, one or two injuries, but he’s earning it. It’s not just because of circumstances, and he’s believing in himself, which is really good, it’s encouraging.”

Edwards did also state that he is keen not to put too much pressure on Mane, as he seeks to develop him in the right way.

Mane’s first Wolves start is so close now

With Wolves struggling so much in the final third and Mane catching the eye when he’s come on, the teenager’s first start surely can’t be far away now.

Liverpool away is obviously a very tough fixture to be making your full Premier League debut in.

But Mane seems to play with such confidence, that maybe, just maybe, Edwards will want to have from the start against the Reds.

The following game against Manchester United might also be an opportunity for Mane to start.

Failing those two games though, the home game with West Ham United – Wolves’ first of 2026 – might be Mane’s big moment.
