Rob Edwards hints at the Wolves player who’s set to play an ‘important’ role under him

Rob Edwards has a big job on his hands to build the confidence of a Wolves squad that has hit rock bottom, and it seems as if one player is set to play a key part in this.

Wolves face an uphill task to stay in the Premier League after a winless run of 11 games, but the appointment of Rob Edwards is hopefully a step in the right direction.

The new Wolves boss has experience in the top-flight from his time at Luton Town, where he took charge of 38 games but won just six in that time.

He did have a much weaker squad at Kenilworth Road, but it’s going to take something special given Wolves have registered the joint worst start of any team in Premier League history.

But, one of Edwards’ biggest qualities is his man management, and that’s exactly what this Wolves squad needs at this moment in time.

Rob Edwards agrees with Matt Doherty that leadership will play a big role at Wolves

Matt Doherty has been sidelined due to a very low-grade medial collateral ligament injury after damage to his knee against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

And things haven’t been so straightforward for the defender on the field this season, appearing just four times in the Premier League.

However, the one thing you can’t fault with Doherty is his leadership on the field, and that’s what Rob Edwards already values as the new Wolves boss.

Edwards was told by a Wolves interviewer that Matt Doherty still has that belief and faith, which led him on to a question about how important leadership will be moving forward.

He responded.

“Yeah, it’s really important. We’re going to need that from everyone. So we’re going to need that when we’re out on the pitch, we’re going to need 11 leaders and then whoever is around in the squad, or not even involved.

“We’re going to need everyone to back the group that is on the pitch at that moment. We’re going to need everyone to show leadership qualities, to show belief and character.”

Wolves leaders need to step up under Rob Edwards

Gone are the days of Ruben Neves and Conor Coady, when you never had to worry about a Wolves side letting you down or not giving their all on the field.

Nowadays, there does seem to be a real lack of leadership in the current squad, with summer signing Ladislav Krejci the only real standout in that department this season.

Vitor Pereira even mentioned he was trying to build the leadership at the club, but the players just didn’t buy into what he was doing at Molineux.

With Matt Doherty, Sam Johnstone and Jose Sa currently the only Wolves regulars over the age of 29, they are the names and voices that Rob Edwards will no doubt trust to steer things.
