Rob Edwards’ first January move is obvious after glaring Wolves issue is exposed vs Man United

Wolves ended an 11-game losing streak with an admirable performance at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, giving fans a rare point to celebrate heading into the new year.

It was the performance Rob Edwards needed from his players after growing noise over Christmas regarding the future of the Wolves boss.

They showed once again that they can compete with the big clubs, and even Gary Neville agrees that Wolves deserved the result.

Mostly positives for a change, but one issue was clear to see — and it needs addressing in January.

Wolves’ worrying lack of depth on full display vs Man Utd

Positive results are few and far between at Wolves this season, so it almost feels wrong to point out problems off the back of a hard-fought draw.

But the reality is that the midfield Edwards fielded shows a real weakness in the squad.

Joao Gomes was the only recognised central midfielder on the pitch, joined by Mateus Mane and Jhon Arias. That’s due to absences of Andre, Marshall Munetsi and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.

In fairness, Wolves fans were delighted with the performance from Arias in that new role. Mane’s name was being chanted all around Molineux, too.

Did Jhon Arias give his best performance in a Wolves shirt to date vs Man United? 🤔

That said, it was a makeshift setup against a side whose midfield strength has been a problem all season. The fact that Edwards didn’t have any other options is damning.

The midfield depth needs addressing in January, and it could be made an even bigger problem in the coming weeks.

Wolves’ midfield depth could get worse

Right now, you would say that a midfielder is absolutely needed in the transfer window.

It could be made even more pivotal by an early departure. Munetsi has three clubs after his signature. The Brazilian duo that usually start for Edwards are also at risk of being snapped up — they’re far too good for the Championship.

Wolves fans, tell us below which players you think will actually leave the club in January! ❌

You could probably convince me of five or six signings needed in January, but we’re not going to see that kind of expenditure after a disastrous summer window.

Tough decisions need to be made, and whether a key player leaves or not, midfielders have to be at the top of Wolves’ shopping list for the month ahead.
