Recently, Wolverhampton Wanderers were linked with a move for Ivan Toney.

It was claimed by TEAMtalk last month that Wolves had asked to be kept informed about the player’s situation.

Toney has enjoyed an inspired 2020/21 campaign, and his goals have played a huge part in Brentford finishing in the play-off places.

Signed last year from Peterborough for a fee worth £10 million in total, big things were expected from him.

And he has delivered and then some.

With two games left to play, Toney has 29 goals to his name in the Championship.

He only needs one more to equal the most goals in a single season in the Championship – a record set by Glenn Murray for Crystal Palace nearly 10 years ago.

Toney has had such a good campaign, he has actually just been nominated for Player of the Year, alongside Norwich City duo Teemu Pukki and Emi Buendia.

He was also named EFL Player of the Year at the 2021 London Football Awards.

Wolves should pounce if Brentford don’t go up

If Brentford fail to win promotion to the Premier League, then Wolves should be making some enquiries about Toney, who looks ready to play in the top-flight.

Barring a significant turnaround, Wolves won’t be signing Willian Jose permanently.

There’s a good chance the club will be searching for a new striker and this latest acknowledgement of Toney suggests he’d be a good bet.
