Report: Wolves must make Nelson Semedo contract decision in May

Wolves reportedly have until the end of May to decide whether to trigger the extension option in Nelson Semedo’s contract.

The defender’s deal is set to expire at the end of the season as things currently stand.

But when Semedo signed for the club from Barcelona in the summer of 2020, Wolves negotiated an option to extend the player’s three-year contract by two years.

According to The Telegraph, the club now have one month to decide whether they will take up their option.

It is understood the player is going to remain at Molineux.

Semedo has had a bit of an up and down season in 2022/23.

He had a very shaky start under Bruno Lage, which could perhaps be put down to the fact he did not have a pre-season.

Semedo suffered a bad hamstring injury at the end of last season and had to undergo surgey.

He didn’t have much preparation coming into this campaign, and it showed as he turned in a string of poor displays.

But since Lopetegui has been at the helm at Molineux, Semedo has generally been pretty good.

The £80,000-a-week Portugal international has been much more solid defensively, and is often a great outlet bombing up the wing.

Wolves would be right to extend Nelson Semedo’s contract

So it looks as though Wolves will be extending Semedo’s contract at some point in the next few weeks.

And that would be good news.

He does still divide opinion a little. But there is no denying Semedo has made big strides under Lopetegui.

It’s just about consistency with him, and cutting out mistakes.

He is a very capable Premier League full-back, and it would be the correct decision to exercise the extension option.

Hopefully, he will actually want to stick around. Because there have been suggestions that Jose Mourinho’s Roma could be keen.

At the very least, Wolves need to be triggering their option in order to protect his market value.
