It has been all change at Wolves recently, with Scott Sellars getting the sack last week.
Following the arrival of Julen Lopetegui as head coach of the first-team, a number of changes have been made.
Pablo Sanz, Juan Peinado, Oscar Caro, Edu Rubio and Daniel Lopetegui all came in, as did Fran Garagarza, the former Eibar sporting director.
Following those arrivals, Sellars departed after an eight-year stint at the club. The club’s lead doctor, Dr Rob Chakraverty has also left the club.
Sellars, who was the technical director, has been replaced by Matt Hobbs. He is the new sporting director at Molineux and according to the club’s official website, will oversee the ‘management of the sporting and performance departments at the club, including the support staff around the men’s first-team and development teams such as coaching, medical, analysis and recruitment’.
It is a change many Wolves fans will back.
A lot of people had grown frustrated with Sellars. Some believed he was at fault some poor recruitment decisions in recent times.
Many have gotten their wish regarding Sellars, and The Athletic reported at the weekend about the decision to move on from Sellars.
Executive chairman Jeff Shi made the call, and the two main reasons for the decision were that he ‘did not have the recruitment background or the force of personality to be the figurehead Wolves needed in one of their key backroom roles’.
Shi apparently believes that Hobbs is a more instinctive manager and a more natural communicator. He is seen as a better fit for the role.
Jeff Shi has made a bold decision to sack Scott Sellars, but Matt Hobbs seems an excellent replacement
The landscape at Wolves has now changed dramatically.
Lopetegui is in along with his team of coaches, and Sellars has now left with Hobbs replacing him as a sporting director.
It does feel as though that was a change that needed to happen.
Many fans were unhappy with Sellars’ contributions, and Shi’s ultimately reason by sacking him is understandable.
Before this new role, Hobbs was the chief scout at the club. This should stand him in good stead working with Garagarza.
