Relive Wolves’ last five Boxing Day results including dramatic win at Goodison Park

Wolves face Manchester United on Boxing Day put could take confidence from their previous performances on this festive day.

In recent years, Wolves have produced an insanely good record on Boxing Day.

Since their promotion to the Premier League, few fixtures have been scheduled on the bank holiday itself.

Wolves last lost on Boxing Day in 2012 when they were hammered 3-0 against Peterborough on their way to being relegated to League One.

Now, they have a chance to extend their unbeaten record against Man United who have also had a poor Premier League campaign to date.

Below Molineux News has highlighted Wolves’ last five Boxing Day fixtures and how they played out.

Wolves 1-0 Reading – 2015

The first game on this list is easily the most unmemorable. Bizarrely Sky Sports opted to televise a mid-table clash between Wolves and Reading.

Kenny Jackett’s team had been poor at home for months coming into the fixture with their last win at Molineux being a 3-0 victory over Huddersfield on October 3rd.

However, a sole James Henry header early in the first half proved to be enough to overcome the visitors on a cold evening.

The result helped spark a four-game Championship winning run before their playoff hopes came crashing down with Benik Afobe’s sale.

Wolves 3-2 Bristol City – 2016

A year later a completely, new-look side was taking on Bristol City on Boxing Day.

After Fosun’s takeover of Wolves in the summer, the club were on their second manager of the season, Paul Lambert.

The Scotsman was struggling in his new role and had only won two games going into the fixture and zero at Molineux.

Up against an equally struggling Bristol City side, the pressure was on to deliver a result.

David Edwards got the Old Gold off to a flying start when he headed the hosts in front three minutes in.

However, a Tammy Abraham and Aden Flint double gave the Robins the lead before half-time.

Helder Costa volleyed in an equaliser just before the hour mark and Ivan Cavaleiro netted what was the winner from the penalty spot with six minutes left.

There was drama at the end when Bristol City thought they had rescued a point but the assistant referee judged that the ball hadn’t gone over the line.

Millwall 2-2 Wolves – 2017

In another entertaining Boxing Day clash, Nuno Espirito Santo took his side to The Den aiming to extend their lead at the top of the Championship table.

Wolves were on a sensational run of form and had won eight of their last nine games in the League.

However, it was far from an ideal start when Lee Gregory put the hosts in front 13 minutes in.

Diogo Jota managed to equalise just before half-time before Romain Saiss gave Wolves the lead 56 minutes in.

Millwall would have the last say on the match as Jake Cooper bundled the ball into the net from a header to rescue a point for the London side.

Fulham 1-1 Wolves – 2018

One of two Premier League fixtures on this list comes in Wolves’ first season back in the top-flight.

With the club flying high under Nuno, the Old Gold took a trip to fellow promoted side Fulham who were struggling at the foot of the table.

Yet, the difference in the table did not show on the pitch as Ryan Sessegnon put the hosts 1-0 with just over 15 minutes left.

However, Wolves did not give up and Saiss managed to pop up with four minutes left to play to net an equaliser and secure a vital point for the Old Gold in their quest for European football.

Everton 1-2 Wolves – 2022

Perhaps the most important match on this list. Julen Lopetegui took charge of his first Premier League game as Wolves manager in a relegation six-pointer.

The Old Gold found themselves bottom of the Premier League going into the World Cup break with just nine points.

However, the Spaniard had now taken charge and had led Wolves to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in his previous match with a 2-0 win over Gillingham.

As the match began, usual service resumed as Yerry Mina put the Toffees 1-0 after seven minutes.

Daniel Podence soon netted an equaliser mid-way through the first-half and it looked like both teams would share the spoils.

However, in the dying seconds of the match, Wolves managed to break and Rayan Ait-Nouri was in the right place at the right time to tap the ball home.

The result ensured that the club got off to the best possible start under Lopetegui and installed real belief within the fanbase that they could really stay up.
