Proof Wolves fans are right to fear Premier League relegation after early season struggles

Wolves fans are understandably fearing the prospect of relegation for the second consecutive season.

The turbulent start has been caused by major departures and a disrupted pre-season, with many new signings arriving late.

Pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has predicted Tottenham to beat Wolves 5-0 this weekend.

Despite encouraging progress in the Carabao Cup, Vitor Pereira’s side are struggling in the league, with the manager making multiple changes each week to try and find a solution to their woes.

Statistics show that Wolves need to revive their form immediately, as newly promoted teams have started the season in outstanding fashion.

Newly promoted teams make the best start to a season since 2017/18

In a bid to end Wolves’ poor Premier League form, Pereira has switched to a back-four system, first deployed during the 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Everton in midweek.

However, there is concern for the Portuguese manager as the three newly-promoted teams, Leeds, Burnley, and Sunderland, have taken a combined 19 points from their opening five games.

As reported by BBC Sport, this marks the best start to a Premier League season by promoted sides since the 2017-18 campaign.

Promoted teams have only achieved a better start on four other occasions, which isn’t good news for the Old Gold, who now face an uphill battle to survive this season.

The West Midlands outfit suffered a humiliating 3-1 home defeat to Leeds last week, and they also face Sunderland and Burnley in consecutive gameweeks.

Picking up maximum points from these fixtures against fellow relegation candidates is essential if Wolves are to avoid an early-season crisis.

Vitor Pereira needs to deliver a winning streak

Last season, Pereira orchestrated a magical six-game winning streak that ultimately saved Wolves from relegation.

This campaign, he needs to replicate that success much earlier to prevent the club hierarchy from taking drastic action and relieving him of his duties.

It is essential that Pereira uses the momentum from the Carabao Cup to help spark a run of positive results.

The manager is being urged to start Joao Gomes and Andre together to reignite Wolves’ fortunes, with the duo considered the club’s most effective midfield partnership.

Pereira must find the right team balance and mindset to string together victories and give Wolves a real chance of survival.

Sunderland, Leeds, and Burnley have strengthened their squads heavily in the summer, so there is no guarantee that their good form will falter.
