Premier League club closing in on deal to sign Wolves player for £8m, he wants to leave

Wolves completed a deal for Jhon Arias earlier this week to make it two signings for the summer, but yet another player could soon be departing.

Wolves have just three weeks now until the new Premier League season gets underway.

Vitor Pereira has expressed his concern about the club’s summer so far, and the hope is that the leadership team at Molineux will really step up now.

A host of names have left the club so far this summer.

But Wolves have only made two actual sales – with Matheus Cunha joining Manchester United and Rayan Ait-Nouri heading to Manchester City.

But it seems a third sale could be in the offing now, with Sam Johnstone close to joining a Premier League rival.

It has been reported by journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon that Sam Johnstone is now closing in on a move to newly promoted Burnley.

Burnley’s interest in Johnstone was first reported a couple of weeks ago, with Scott Parker placing him high on his list of targets.

But things have seemingly accelerated, and now Johnstone is poised to make the move to Lancashire.

Burnley, of course, are losing James Trafford, who is returning to Manchester City two years after leaving them.

Sunderland have also been linked with Johnstone and they are also mentioned.

But the Black Cats are now looking at Ukraine international Dmytro Riznyk.

It is stated that Johnstone is set to seal his move to Burnley for a fee in the region of £8 million.

Wolves right to sell Johnstone

So it appears yet another player could be on his way out of Molineux, but few fans will complain about the sale of Johnstone.

Johnstone’s move to Wolves simply has not worked out, and he is too expensive to be warming the bench.

While he did not impress in the 2024/25 season, Johnstone is still a number one-standard goalkeeper who needs to be playing regularly as a number one.

If Wolves can get £8 million for him then that is a decent deal. To only lose £2 million on him after the underwhelming season he had isn’t bad going. It’s also good when you factor in that Johnstone does want to leave Wolves.

Hopefully, if he does go to Burnley, Johnstone can nail down the number one spot and get his career back on track.
