Player who recently left Molineux frankly admits he just didn’t enjoy his football at Wolves in 2024/25

Wolves have sanctioned a number of exits already this summer, and one player’s departure is pretty understandable.

This summer has mostly been about player outgoings rather than incomings so far.

Only Fer Lopez and Jhon Arias have arrived up to now, and fans are starting to get concerned with the new season just a few weeks away.

Vitor Pereira has also been vocal about Wolves’ summer, imploring the club to hand him the new recruits he needs to kick on with the team.

We have seen several players leave on loan, and one man who’ll be spending the season away from Wolves temporarily is Tommy Doyle, who has given a very honest view of how he felt about last season.

Tommy Doyle admits last season at Wolves was not enjoyable

Last summer, Doyle completed a permanent move to Wolves from Manchester City, after spending the 2023/24 season on loan at Molineux.

Doyle had put in some impressive performances in that campaign, so his permanent move came as no surprise.

But unfortunately for Doyle, he really struggled for minutes in 2024/25, with Andre and Joao Gomes the preferred duo.

He got several chances under Gary O’Neil, but barely featured under Vitor Pereira.

Doyle’s profile just didn’t seem one that Pereira particularly valued.

So Doyle left to join Birmingham City on loan, and now the midfielder has opened up about his struggles last season.

After featuring in Blues’ penultimate pre-season friendly at Port Vale, he told the Birmingham Mail: “Even though I was on the bench at Wolves last season, there was still a few games where I played a massive part.

“It is frustrating but the main thing is you’ve got to stay professional and help the boys as much as you can.

“I just want to play and enjoy it. I can’t say my football last season was enjoyable.

“Of course I was still professional and did everything to be in the best position I could so when I got the chance I was ready, but it’s all about playing games and enjoying it. Once that happens, the individual play won’t be an issue.”

Doyle has great chance to shine this season at Birmingham

Doyle’s lack of football last season was a real shame.

He is a good player, but his struggles have really boiled down to him having two outstanding players ahead of him.

Then, a new manager came in who clearly prefers different profiles to his.

Doyle has been somewhat unlucky at Wolves, and has always given his all for the club and been professional. It’s just one of those things, and he had to move on this summer.

Doyle is a coup for Birmingham and the midfielder now has the chance to get his career back on track.

He knows the Championship having played in it before with Sheffield United, and one would imagine he has the quality to really stand out in the second tier.
