‘Phenomenal’ Wolves ace can do something for the first time in 51 years v Liverpool

Wolves face a challenging final day of the 2023/24 season against Liverpool however, one of Gary O’Neil’s stars can achieve a feat that hasn’t been done for 51 years.

Gary O’Neil will see the final game of his first season at Wolves play out at Anfield, as the Old Gold prepare to battle Liverpool for three points in the closing 90 minutes of the 2023/24 calendar.

It’s poised to be an emotional day on Merseyside as the Reds bid farewell to Jurgen Klopp however, the Midlands club will travel with the intent of causing an upset in the German’s final game.

Only one side has won at Anfield this season, as Crystal Palace conquered Liverpool last month, giving Wolves a slim chance of claiming an audacious victory on Sunday afternoon.

Winning would not be the only narrative that could make the headlines from a Wolves point of view on Sunday, with the chance there for Hwang Hee-chan to become the first player in 51 years to achieve one thing in the Old Gold.

Hwang Hee-chan can become the first Wolves player to score home and away against Liverpool in 51 years

O’Neil’s side realised the difficulty that comes with playing against Liverpool earlier this season, as a solid performance was not enough to secure a result.

The Reds won 3-1 at Molineux despite Hwang opening the scoring although, the Korean’s goal has given him the opportunity to match a long-standing achievement.

You would have to go back to the 1972/73 season to recall the last time a Wolves player scored home and away against Liverpool in a league campaign, as John Richards completed the feat 51 years ago.

Not only would a goal at Anfield see Hwang complete the challenging record against Liverpool, but would also see the striker become the first Wolves player to score home and away against the Reds in the Premier League era.

Hwang Hee-chan will want to end his season on a high

It’s been a difficult but impactful season for Hwang at Molineux, as the 28-year-old has matched his best scoring season in a domestic league despite being absent for a chunk of the campaign.

Prior to leaving on international duty for the Asia Cup, there weren’t many players at Wolves more clinical than Hwang, who netted 10 goals after 19 games played at the start of the 2023/24 Premier League calendar.

Lauded as ‘phenomenal’ by captain Max Kilman for his contribution in the first half of the season, the forward will now hope to end the term on a high, after seeing his form suffer as a result of injury at the turn of the year.

A goal against Liverpool on Sunday would take Hwang’s league tally to 13 goals, the best scoring season of his career, eclipsing the 12 goals he scored in the Austrian Bundesliga for RB Salzburg in the 2016/17 campaign.
