Paul Merson would be ‘shocked’ if one thing does not happen in Wolves’ game vs Liverpool

Paul Merson has delivered a bleak prediction for Wolves ahead of their showdown against Liverpool.

The former Arsenal man states he would be ‘shocked’ if one thing does not happen at Anfield. Wolves will be looking for an upset, as they chase their first win of the Premier League season in game 18.

It has been an arduous season for the Old Gold, but Alan Shearer feels sympathy for Rob Edwards and the job he has taken on.

Additionally, Opta’s supercomputer does not fancy the Wanderers’ chances, joining Paul Merson in his verdict.

Paul Merson is not expecting much from Wolves at Anfield when they play Liverpool, with the former Arsenal man downplaying their chances.

While pundits like Chris Sutton think this game suits the Wanderers, Merson has taken the completely opposite approach.

Merson said (via Sportskeeda), “No way Wolves are going to win this football match! Their goal against Arsenal just covered over the cracks. It was only after they went behind in that game that they came out and played some football.

“I expect Wolves to sit back in this game too… I would be shocked if Liverpool don’t win this game comfortably.”

In the end, Merson has predicted a 3-0 loss for Wolves.

On paper, Merson’s suggestion is not entirely wrong, but Liverpool are coming into the game with plenty of injuries.

If a performance akin to the one shown against Arsenal can be put on, there is certainly a chance for a result. The Anfield side’s defence is not nearly as strong as the Gunners’.

With a strong starting XI, Wolves could cause issues and perhaps even defy the odds given their record against reigning champions.

Wolves’ history against reigning champions does not bode well

The Old Gold do not have a great history when playing away against the reigning champions in England’s top flight.

Wolves have lost 24 of their last 27 away league games against the reigning top-flight champions.

Their three wins have come against:

However, that shows that it is possible. In that 1983/1984 season, Liverpool would go on to win the title for a second season in a row, and an Old Gold side, who finished bottom, picked up a win against them.

Hopefully, history can repeat itself.
