Paul Merson now shares if he thinks Wolves will actually get relegated this season

It was always going to be a tough start for Wolves, and so far it has proven to be just that.

On Saturday, Wolves lost for the fourth time in a row in the Premier League, falling to a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United.

Nick Woltemade’s strike was the difference at St. James’ Park.

Wolves did well in the first-half, with Vitor Pereira springing a few surprises with his team selection, which included inverted wing-backs and two up top.

But in the end, Wolves didn’t capitalise and lost 1-0.

Wolves have never before started with four straight defeats, and it’s safe to say plenty of fans are fairly concerned at the moment.

And now, Paul Merson has offered his thoughts on Wolves’ hopes of avoiding relegation this season.

No one really thought Wolves would get off to a flying start this season after the fixtures were released.

But some did expect more than zero points, and this weekend’s game with Leeds United has already become very important.

Wolves just need to get the ball rolling.

Granted, it’s been tricky because the club had a poor summer, with several signings joining towards the end of the transfer window.

The international break has also not afforded Pereira much time to work with the new players.

Many fans are worried about the fate of the club this season, but Merson – who is predicting Wolves to beat Leeds this weekend – believes that relegation won’t be a possibility this season, despite Wolves opening with four straight defeats.

He told Sportskeeda: “I saw Wolves at Newcastle and I thought they weren’t that bad. Just because they’ve lost every game so far this season, people think Wolves will get relegated.

“But honestly, I don’t worry about their survival. I’ve seen enough from them to believe they can avoid relegation!”

Wolves set for season of struggle

Pereira had wanted to have Wolves finishing in mid-table this season, having guided the club to a 16th placed finish last term.

But many feel that won’t be possible given the make-up of the squad and, frankly, Pereira himself will probably feel that’ll be a tall order now.

Wolves still have a lot of talented players, which will hopefully be enough to avoid relegation. And keeping Jorgen Strand Larsen was especially important.

But everything right now is pointing to Wolves struggling in 2025/26, and worryingly, the three teams that have come up from the Championship have all got points on the board early doors.

Last term, Wanderers were slightly fortunate in that the three teams that went down were very poor.
