Paul Merson makes score prediction for Brentford v Wolves and shares one positive for Gary O’Neil

Wolves travel to London this weekend and are hoping to get their first Premier League win against Brentford.

Wolves have struggled so far, taking just one point from their first six games.

Performances have been OK and there have been some promising signs. But Gary O’Neil‘s side have been unable to capitalise on their good periods in games.

Wolves have also looked shaky at the back which has been making life difficult.

The fixtures have been tough but it’s Brentford up next and while Thomas Frank’s side can be difficult for any team in the division, the Bees have injury problems.

It’s a chance for Wolves, and Paul Merson has now given his thoughts ahead of the game.

When the fixtures list was released you could almost hear the collective groan of the Wolves supporters.

Without doubt, Wanderers were dealt the most difficult hand of any Premier League club, and so, people did not really expect too much.

Many fans expected Wolves to be down the bottom around this point in the season, although perhaps not rock-bottom.

The difficulty of the fixtures has meant that the Wolves board still has faith in O’Neil right now.

But the manager could do with picking up some points soon and the Brentford game is undoubtedly a big opportunity.

And pundit Paul Merson is backing Wolves to get their first win on the board down in London. He told Sportskeeda: “Wolves are really struggling at the moment. But I actually thought they did alright against Liverpool last weekend, even though they ended up losing that game.

“Gary O’Neil is under pressure now. Wolves have been involved in some difficult football matches, but they have played decent football albeit in patches throughout these games.

“Sometimes when you look at the season as a whole, you want to be playing the big boys early on in the season like Wolves have done this time around. It could work in their favor because it’s better than facing these top teams in January, when you could be facing a whole new set of problems like injuries for example.

“I’m going to fancy Wolves in this game though. I have a strange feeling about them securing a cheeky little away win.”

Win at Brentford could be the catalyst

Saturday’s game with Brentford is simply huge for Wolves.

The fixtures have been extremely tough so far, but this game represents a genuinely good chance to get three points on the board to relieve some of the pressure.

Brentford are a great side but they will be weakened on Saturday, with the likes of Yoane Wissa and Mathias Jensen unavailable.

Bryan Mbeumo is in form right now and will be a big threat.

But Wolves have the quality to win this game, and three points this weekend would go a long way in terms of boosting morale.
