In O’Neil’s first game in charge, Wolves lost to Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford – but given his the game panned out there was a real sense of injustice.
Wolves played United off the park for most of the game, and should have had a penalty awarded right at the end when Andre Onana clattered Sasa Kalajdzic – something that was later admitted as a mistake, with Wolves receiving an apology from the PGMOL.
The wind is in Wolves’ sails right now, and in the eyes of Merson, that will result in a home win. Predicting a 2-1 victory for Wanderers, he said (Sportskeeda): “If Wolves win this, they go above Manchester United in the table. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise – Wolves are nine games unbeaten at home, while Manchester United were on a run of five winless games on their travels before beating Wigan Athletic and Newport.
“Since it’s Manchester United, everything is going to be magnified, but I feel for Erik ten Hag, especially after his incident with Marcus Rashford. The Dutchman did well to bite his tongue and say he would sort it out internally, but he can’t have players going to nightclubs and failing to show up for training! I never missed a day of training in my professional career even if I only got in at 6 AM, so I really feel for the manager here.
“I think Wolves will win this one and end Manchester United’s hopes of a top-four finish once and for all.”
Wolves can beat United
Wolves fans are really excited for Thursday’s game, with the team in fantastic form heading into the clash.
The win over West Brom has increased the feeling of optimism further, and there appears to be genuine belief that Wolves can beat United.
Wolves have already beaten Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea at Molineux this season so there is every reason to believe O’Neil can do something here.
United have been totally erratic this season under ten Hag, and the chance to leapfrog the Red Devils in the table will definitely be on the Wolves players’ minds.
