Opta supercomputer rates Rob Edwards’ chances of a Wolves win vs Aston Villa

If Wolves’ task of beating Aston Villa was not already clearly difficult, the Opta supercomputer paints the picture plainly.

Rob Edwards’ side travel to Villa Park with it all to do.

They are in 20th place in the Premier League, and the Villans are in excellent form. That has not stopped Unai Emery from refusing to be complacent.

A win would be huge for Wolves, and it could shift the momentum at the club, but the chances of that look to be slim.

And Opta’s projections show that vividly.

To no surprise, Wolves are overwhelming underdogs against Aston Villa

The expectation for Sunday is for Wolves to come away with yet another loss, and that would extend their winless Premier League run to 17 games.

Paul Merson has no hope for Wolves, but former Aston Villa man Gabby Agbonlahor believes the Old Gold can get a result.

And when it comes to data powerhouse Opta, they are siding with Merson on this one.

Anything can happen in a derby…

Since Wolves and Aston Villa have been back in the Premier League (2019), Wolves have won six of their 12 games against the Villans (50%).

The Opta supercomputer has only given Wolves a 12.5% chance of beating Aston Villa, with the hosts given 71%.

Both sides sharing the spoils comes in at 16.5%. If the Old Gold came away with all three points, it would certainly be an upset.

For the Wanderers, that 12.5% outside shot would be a statement victory. A win at a tough ground, against a team in form, and against a rival. The confidence boost would be huge.

No outside pressure for Wolves, but lots on the inside

Nobody is expecting the Old Gold to win at Villa Park, and that could be helpful for Rob Edwards’ team.

The outside pressure will be non-existent on Sunday; however, the pressure to turn things around within the club and among the fanbase is starting to increase.

Pundits completely write Wolves off for Aston Villa clash ❌

“I’d be amazed if they go there [Villa Park] and get something, but you never know in derby games. I guess if you are on a run like this and go and win a game, then it would be a derby game, because some strange things happening in those matches.”

Alan Shearer

“I don’t think Wolves can win this weekend. It looks like Derby County’s record for lowest points will be under threat from Wolves this season.”

Paul Merson

Wolves are in huge trouble in terms of relegation, and if they want any hope of retaining their Premier League status, they need to start winning games as quickly as possible.

Sam Johnstone has said that Rob Edwards has a lot of issues to fix, but there is not much time to solve all of them.

Unfortunately that could end up being the nail in the coffin.
