Nuno Santo transfer flop now opens up on Wolves exit and explains ‘difficult’ problems he faced

A former Wolves player has opened up about his exit in 2023 as well as outlining his future plans.

There’s been great change at Wolves since the early days of Nuno Santo, who led the Old Gold back to the Premier League.

The Portuguese coach took the Midlands club on a European journey, as well as welcoming some of Wolves’ recent big names to Molineux.

Since Nuno’s exit in 2021, Bruno Lage, Julen Lopetegui and Gary O’Neil have been at the helm, with a new wave of stars coming through.

Leonardo Campana opens up about Wolves after 2023 transfer

Aside from household names such as Raul Jimenez, Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho, Nuno also signed several talents who failed to make the cut at Molineux.

In 2020, Wolves announced the capture of Leonardo Campana from Ecuadorian side Barcelona SC when he was just 19 years old.

Unfortunately for Campana, his ticket to the Premier League was voided as he was soon after sent on loan to Famalicao to gain experience.

It was only in 2023 that the Ecuadorian cut ties with Wolves, signing for Inter Miami after failing to make a single appearance for the Old Gold.

Recently, the striker spoke to Ecuavisa about life with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, where he opened up on his time at Wolves.

“That Wolverhampton [squad] was flying in 2020,” Campana said.

“We had a great team, I had to be on the bench. Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore, Diogo Jota, Pedro Neto, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves.

“The pandemic came and I couldn’t find my way, I went on loan to Portugal, Switzerland… and I had a difficult time because of my injuries.”

Being a young striker in a Wolves side that possessed so much attacking talent, Campana’s chances were slim, particularly considering the form of Jimenez in particular.

Campana hopes for European return

While things didn’t work for Campana at Wolves, that hasn’t deterred his desire to one day return to play in Europe.

The centre-forward shared his gratitude towards Inter Miami for welcoming him after his initial loan spell before explaining his future plans.

“Here in Miami they opened the doors for me, they made me feel special and my career began to take a new direction. I am very grateful to the coaches I have had here and to the owners of the team.

“I would love to return to Europe, I owe myself a debt.”

Campana linked up with the Wolves team during pre-season as the squad trained at Inter Miami’s complex.

Still only 24, there is plenty for the forward to aim for in his career ahead, having found his feet in the MLS, where he’s scored 27 goals in 78 appearances.

Who knows if Wolves and Campana cross paths again in the future, with the striker having no bad feelings about his former club.
