New David Ornstein revelation about Vitor Pereira sacking will infuriate Wolves fans

Wolves fans have grown tired of how poorly the club has been run in recent times – and one revelation from David Ornstein about Wolves’ sacking of Vitor Pereira will do little to lift the mood.

Pereira was fired by Wolves on Sunday, which is a decision many felt was necessary. Some felt it should have come weeks before.

Wolves were heading nowhere under the Portuguese, who failed to oversee a single Premier League win this season.

In fact, Pereira had not won a game in the Premier League since April against Leicester City, and his relationship with the fans, which was once special, had soured.

Pereira’s position became untenable, and he simply couldn’t stay.

The signs were there weeks before that he was not the right man to be taking Wolves’ forward, such as when Pereira reacted angrily in front of the South Bank after the defeat to Burnley.

But despite this, Wolves had no succession plan in place.

David Ornstein appeared on The Athletic’s podcast to discuss the situation at Wolves.

And the journalist spoke a bit about the club’s decision to sack Pereira just weeks after handing him a new contract.

And one revelation he made is bound to annoy supporters – and that is that Wolves did not actually start planning for life after Pereira until actually making the decision to sack him.

Ornstein said: “I think they wanted to give Vitor Pereira as long as possible. And therefore, they didn’t start a process to replace him before he was actually sacked.

“Once he was, the work began in earnest, or maybe Saturday night after the Fulham defeat, into Sunday, phone calls were starting to be made to express interest in a number of candidates, including Gary O’Neil, to try and set up conversations.

“They moved pretty swiftly in terms of the Gary O’Neil discussions, and Rob Edwards.”

Gary O’Neil was close to returning to Wolves, but ultimately withdrew after failing to reach an agreement, with some suggesting the negative reaction from supporters online also played a part in his decision.

Wolves are now thought to be very keen on Edwards, but prising him away from Boro could be difficult.

Wolves need miracle to stave off relegation

It will come as no real surprise that the Wolves hierarchy didn’t have an actual succession plan in place for if they sacked Pereira.

Seemingly, they were so convinced that he would turn things around that they didn’t need to prepare.

Now Pereira is gone, and Wolves are trying to find a successor.

It appears they thought O’Neil would be that man, but he’s withdrawn from the process, meaning the club now have to look for an alternative.

The situation is just in keeping with how chaotic things have been at the club, and it is genuinely going to take something special for Wolves to avoid dropping into the Championship.
