Wolves defender Nelson Semedo started for Portugal as they took on the Republic of Ireland in World Cup qualification last night.

The two sides played out a 0-0 draw at the Aviva Stadium, with the hosts looking the more likely to score in the closing stages after Pepe’s red card.

The result means that qualifying is still in Portugal’s hands, but they must not lose to Serbia on Sunday night to get to Qatar.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Semedo was Portugal’s most impressive player according to WhoScored, who handed him the highest rating of any player on the away side.

Nobody on either side had more than his 82 touches on the night or made more tackles than his three.

Semedo also made three clearances, won two headers and made a successful dribble.

It was not a stunning performance but it was a solid display and continued a decent run of form for Semedo.

Portugal play a back four but that slight adjustment from wing-back to full-back did not affect Semedo at all.

It is impressive to stand out in a side which has the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes in it.

Portugal’s defence will be weakened by Pepe’s suspension in that crunch Serbia clash.

But that only puts more pressure on the likes of Semedo to step up and if he repeats last night’s performance on Sunday, he will have done his part.
