Nelson Semedo has said he is grateful to Nuno Espirito Santo for helping him to improve the defensive side of his game.

The wing-back is now 14 months into his stint at Molineux, after signing from Barcelona in 2020.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

The Portugal international has racked up 46 appearances so far.

He has been the regular pick for both Nuno and Bruno Lage, with Ki-Jana Hoever playing backup for now.

It was a mixed bag for Semedo last term.

He started off a little shaky coming into a new team, league and formation.

But from the start of 2021 onwards, he did improve.

One of the biggest criticisms of Semedo has been the defensive side of his game.

He has made some errors in a Wolves shirt, including recently against Leeds United when he gave away a penalty.

But Semedo has undoubtedly been getting better, and has made 32 tackles so far in the Premier League. That is actually more than all but four players.

Semedo has put his improvement down to the help of his previous manager Nuno.

He said in an interview with the Premier League (via Wolves official): “Nuno taught me a lot about the defensive way. I came from a team that used to have the ball all the game.

“I came here and didn’t have too much of the ball and (we) defended a lot. It was difficult for me, but he helped me a lot with that and I’m very thankful.”

Semedo not far off becoming a top PL full-back

Semedo has definitely really improved the defensive side of his game.

He clearly just needed some time to adjust to the Premier League, especially coming in to an alien formation.

Working with Nuno has evidently served him well.

In terms of defending one-vs-one, he is largely pretty solid now.

He just needs to perhaps keep his focus a bit better, so that he doesn’t make any more errors.

He still gets quite a bit of stick, but Semedo doesn’t warrant it. He really isn’t far off becoming a top Premier League full-back. He is about to come into his prime years now so there’s every chance he’ll really start to shine.
