Nedum Onuoha shares what he’s heard about the Wolves dressing room at the moment

Wolves will be looking to get their season up and running after the international break after a horrible start.

Gary O’Neil’s side have yet to win a game in the Premier League, taking just one point so far from a possible 21.

And it’s 21 goals conceded so far, with the defending having been very suspect indeed.

Things are not about to get any easier for Wolves, with Manchester City and Brighton the next two fixtures. But a more favourable run against Crystal Palace, Southampton, Fulham and Bournemouth then follows.

It’s a very tough period right now. But the Wolves board feels O’Neil can turn things around.

The mood internally appears to still be positive, with former defender Nedum Onuoha now informing fans what he’s been hearing about players and the Wolves manager.

It has been a pretty poor 2024 for Wolves.

The club was in such a promising position going into the second half of last season.

But the size of the squad counted against Wolves as injuries took away key players and forced the manager to turn to youth.

The poor form has continued into 2024/25, and everyone must be very frustrated with how things have gone.

However, Nedum Onuoha – who knows and speaks to O’Neil – has insisted that the dressing room remains behind the head coach.

The pundit told BBC Sport: “I’m fortunate enough to know Gary and speak with him every so often and the way the club is going through a change in how they operate, you did not feel like he was under pressure.

“The club understood the difficulties of it, but O’Neil himself will know that he wants to do better and the team can do better.

“From what I hear, the players are still on side, so it does not feel as much of an ‘under pressure’ situation as at some other clubs in similar difficulties.”

It has been reported that Wolves could look to hire Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin if O’Neil cannot turn things around.

O’Neil can turn things around at Wolves

It is absolutely crucial for O’Neil that he does not lose the players amid this tough and demoralising period.

When people start checking out, there is very little hope of turning things around at clubs.

There are some interesting parallels between O’Neil and Bruno Lage’s stints at Wolves. Around this time two years ago when he got sacked, Lage had lost the Wolves players, some of whom were apparently not fans of his methods.

At the moment, it appears that O’Neil still has plenty of support at Molineux. We know he’s got a bit of backing from his superiors, who have taken into account the difficulty of the fixture list.

And seemingly the players still believe in what he’s trying to do.

Hopefully he can steady the ship, because O’Neil really does have the potential to take this team far. He is extremely hardworking and passionate about what he does, and it would be a big shame to see him get sacked.

Wolves could very possibly lose to Manchester City and Brighton. But those next four games are major opportunities to get points on the board and should he fail to get a decent haul, there is surely no way O’Neil can remain in his post.
